An R56 engine swapped into an R53?

How difficult do you think it would be? What would be major stumbling blocks?

This would seem to be a step backwards...

Probably more work than it would be worth. The swap itself would be complex, expensive, and ultimately wouldn't be anything superior to the existing engine. You'd be much better off doing a full build on an R53 setup and replacing the supercharger for a complete custom turbo setup.
You'd wind up with a lot more power, it would be a lot less work, and it would probably still be cheaper.
