Is intermittent setting on non-rain sensing wipers adjustable?

The 2007 coupe owner's manual says it is a "preset" which implies no to me.

If not, does the spead-sensing really make up for it not being speed-adjustable?

No, it is not adjustable. The speed-sensing is about as useful as the rain-sensitivity adjust in my wife's bimmer. Not very...

Are the variable wipers really *speed-sensing* in the R55/56? Even on the later first-gen cars (like my 2006 R52), MINI had abandoned the speed-sensing in favour of a system that actually uses a sensor in the windshield to measure the rain intensity.

On my MINI, the system is brilliant - literally "turn it on and forget it". It activates the wipers just often enough to keep the windshield clear, without ever "squeaking" across a dry windshield that doesn't need wiped.

And with the rain-sensing wipers, the sensitivity is dealer-adjustable if it doesn't work right "out of the box".

The intermittent wipe is pre-set on cars without rain sensing but is user-adjustable via "set-info" on cars with it. It's brilliant!
