What if wrong PS fluid is used?

What happens if I put ATF fluid in a new PS pump? I just realized that I wasn't suposed to do that. It's been in for almost 6 months. Can I flush the fluid, or will I need to replace the pump again?

I wouldn't worry too much, but would probably get it flushed and replaced sooner than later. It used to be (years ago) that you could use Automatic Transmission fluid in place of power steering fluid, but not the other way around. Greg

As an example, check out: http://www.carcare.org/Fluids_Filter...ng_fluid.shtml

Ok, maybe I've got that wrong. I used regular PS fluid. I used GUNK brand PS Fluid, not Automatic Transmission Fluid. Sorry I got that wrong. The MINI requires a special hydrolic PS fluid not the typical PS fluid.

I can't speak to the differrent types, but my feeling is that you're still ok; I would not lose any sleep over it, but get it changed out properly eventually. If the pump is going to go, it'll let you know, so no sense in worrying about it. That to me is almost like saying you can't use regular motor oil in the engine - sure you can - it won't last as long as synthetic, but it works just fine - is it as good?, no, but it'll work fine short-term if that's all there was available.

Good luck! Greg

If it has been 6 months on that stuff, I'd say you are in the clear. If it was to destroy something, I would think it have done so already.

When my powersteering was low I added the BMW stuff it recomends. I forget what exactly, but it's listed on the reservor cap. It was only $24 with tax for a huge bottle at the BMW dealer here.

Mini used Pentosin CHF 11s. If you put ATF in or any other fluid, as long as it was a small amount you should be ok. i would still get it flushed asap. make sure you always use CHF 11s other wise you can cause wear issues within the rack.

Ok, I forgot to mention my prior issues. About 2 weeks ago I noticed my steering got "notchy." (I had just jacked the MINI's front driver's side end up to do an oil change if that makes any difference) I talked to the dealer and they said it sounded like the rack. Went in to have it looked at, and they said the rack was leaking. I had it up on a lift this weekend at a different local dealership, and there is no evidence of leaking rack. The boots are not full of anything, nor are they leaking anything at all. Recently the notchy-ness has stopped. So, something is or was causing a problem. I guess I'll just flush it pretty good a couple of times to be safe and see what happens, think?

If theres a problem, the damage has been done. flush it and use what is recommended and see if an issue arrises.
