Extended warranty, some questions?

Hello ,

I just bought recently 2006 mini cooper and was wondering from where to buy the extended warranty. I was offered one from EASY CARE for 1500 dollars for extra 30,000 miles ( I have 27,000 mile on it) . It was bumper to bumper? But do not know what will be the real deal when I really need it.

Second one was from local minidealer? they are talking about 2 types of warranty. One is same as above and the other is Mechanical warranty for 1400 dollars for all the stuff like breaks and other stuff.
So
To make it short I need help/suggestion to get the right warranty and I live in troy,Michigan

Warranty Direct

I just bought an extended warranty from Warranty Direct. It was $1500 for a 4 year up to 100,000 Mile extension, full bumper to bumper coverage $100 deductible. I did my research as I have a 2004 with CVT and 41K miles on it. The extension takes me to 100K. The best thing is there is no limit on what they will pay for. A new engine, no problem, a new transmission (@ $6000-7000) no problem. I now feel very safe when driving. They have a payment plan that lets you put down 20% and pay the rest over 10 months. The contract is clear and easy to read, and their reputation is impeccable. I strongly suggest doing your research, but this was the best I could find.

best thing is to get an extended warranty that there will be NO problem with yr MINI dealer honoring. In sept about a month before my OEM waraanty expires, Im going with a GE warranty my MA will sell me that covers most mechanical and electric parts and labor, minus wear items like brake pads, clutch, etc, with only a $50 deductible per visit, not repair. Plus my dealer tailors the GE warranty to low or high projected miles, if I plan to stick with my less than 10K/year it's much cheaper. Plus it is fully transferable to another owner, and I still get the full roadside assistance I get with the OEM warranty--and a loaner car. cant beat that.

Im not big on extended warranties, but Ive had some pricey warranty issues with my 05 S and I dont really like the R56s so I plan to keep it around for awhile.

There are a lot of EW scams out there, one of the biggest is Great American, which actually charges you to review their policies so try to stick with whatever yr MINI dealer honors for the least amount of stress and headaches. BTW the GE is 7 years (from date actually put in service) or 100K.

id look into this before any other EW. at least this is one used by the dealer. HUGE caveat emptor for all others.

go to the dealer and see what they use, that's yr best bet. others may not be honored, or may have huge restrictions.

Oh the EW is not from the mini dealer, it is from the "EASY CARE" where as the mechanical servce plan offer is by the mini dealer. So inother word that will not include Motor/transmission.
Still and I will appreciate if you have web link for good EW provider that includes mechanical repait too. Thanx

Hmmm, now you guys have me thinking about this MINI sponsored extended warranty... right after my initial 55k "extended" warranty period expired, I had a fairly costly set of repairs (thanks to the CRAPPY road conditions present here in the Northeast caused by Mother Nature's chaotic swings in temperment).
Thanks for the advice I wasn't even seeking. :-)

That was a heckova deal. I called them about my car, and because it has 52k instead of 41k, the premium was $2800, for fewer miles and less time, even though it's a year newer and not automatic (it is an "S", though). The best I could find for my car was through Carchex (affiliated w/ Carfax), and it was $2200 for 3 years and up to 100k bumper to bumper, with 18 mo payments, 10% down.....

I know it's a gamble, but I'm not very lucky when it comes to stuff like this, so I am sure if I didn't get it, I would be kicking myself somewhere down the road......literally.....

Make sure you read what the EW covers and what it doesn't.

The factory EW doesn't cover things like rattles, navigation units and some other things as well.

Just make sure you really really think that you'll spend $2000 in repairs in that warranty period. If you don't you might as well have lit that money on fire and tossed it onto a can of petrol. Use it or lose it!

I figured between 50k and 100k miles, on a car that's going to be 4-7 years old, the odds are pretty good. If I sell it, it's transferable, will help get top dollar (mo' money)......

I also have lots of crap to be stressed over, this will mean 1 less thing.....

I keep hearing stories of people with extended warranties that aren't worth the paper they are written on. I say put the money in a special account that you would have spent on the extended warranty, add a bit to it now and then, and hope nothing breaks....so you can use the money toward your next MINI.

Well, good suggestion, but you don't understand that a CVT transmission cost $6000-$7000 to replace, and they have been reported to fail between 45K and 80K! They cannot be rebuilt and failure rate is over the normal 6-8%. This is an insurance policy on the car that helps me sleep at night. So why did I get a CVT? I have a bad hip joint and cannot clutch anymore. That wasn't going to stop me from getting a mini, especially the one I had lusted over for 6 years (Gold and Black with Gold and Black interior, last year was 2004). BMW's extended warranty sucked. Warranty Direct pays "all" parts and labor costs directly to the Repair facility (BMW) I pay $100 out of pocket. To me it was worth it. You have a life insurance policy right? To me this is a life insurance policy on the car. I certainly wouldn't take my life insurance premiums and stick them in the bank. Besides, my wife would eventually spend it!

I bought the EasyCare extended warranty just before my factory warranty expired. I mean the day before. I paid about $1800 for it, adding an extra 4 years and 38,000 miles. At 4 years I was at 37k, so I figured 75k total in another 4 years was a good number.
Last month, my passenger window motor died. Dealership price to replace was $440. I have a $100 per visit deductible. Makes sense to use it.
While the car was there, they looked around and found some other stuff that needed doing that EasyCare would cover. I had the passenger side motor mount replaced, front upper control arms replaced and a couple of other bits and pieces done. EasyCare wound up paying $1709. A couple of little things and the warranty has almost paid for itself, and I still have 2 1/2 years left on it. I say, if you have the money now and you're playing the odds, it's not a bad bet.

all this talk of extended warranties and I just noticed: for the first time ever, Consumer Reports gave the MINI Cooper 3 solid red dots for reliability, consumer satisfaction, and operating/resale costs.

dunno if it was for the 2006 models, but I would guess it did.

I about pooped me britches when I saw that, and the only other cars to get that 3 reds across the board? a couple of Japanese-made Toyotas, inc the Prius. Even Honda didnt fare as well.

I agree, it can be a good deal, especially if you are able to find a truly reputable company. I get junk mail from various extended warraty companies all the time telling me it's my "last chance" to sign up. If I want one at some point I will consider your recommendation.

Read the fine print of any warranty. Most carry a maximum payout over their life. $8,000 to $10,000 is the norm.

My 2006 has the extended coverage 50,000 miles. I am still unclear if that was purchased by the original buyer or something that came with my car. My dealer told me I was covered to 50,000. I sure wish I could pay to get it certified and extend that coverage to 100k, like the used units sitting on my Mini dealers lot.

Life insurance is kind of a special case, since although death at an early age is a low-probability event, the severity if it *does* happen is very high (as in, it's likely to be financially devastating for your spouse/children).

Now, if having to replace the transmission would devastate you financially, then it's probably wise to get the extended warranty, but if you look at the "expected cost" of the repair, if there's an 8% chance of having to shell out $7000 for a repair, that works out to $560. If you calculate the likelihood of every possible warrantable repair, and multiply each one by its repair cost, I can guarantee you that the total will end up being less than the extended warranty costs. That's how the warranty companies make money - by taking in more in warranty sales than they spend in repairs.

But again, it's your choice, and if even the *chance* of having to pay for the repairs out-of-pocket is a risk you're not willing to take, then the extended warranty is probably the right thing for you.

Your cars original warranty was 4 years/50,000 miles. The maintenance coverage was for 3yrs/36,000 miles. MINI sells an extended maintenance warranty than goes until 4 years or 50,000 miles.

SWEET, thanks for the info. Guess my original owner bought the extended service plan too. Bonus. 21k left on my maintenance plan...off to wear down some rotors...no more down shifting for me.

With about 4,000 miles to go I'm considering getting an extended warranty too. 46,000 miles in two years so it's likely I'll be over 100,000 before the 5-year mark. A quick Google of EasyCare showed a history of problems:

I'm gonna look some more.

I still think it's a better idea to put the money you would spend on an extended warranty in a special account and hope for the best.
