My 1st post is a 1st Gen question

Hello everyone!

I've been lurking for a long time and I keep coming back to the MINI as my next car. I signed up to the board a few months ago and continued to lurk some more.

I was thinking about getting a new MINI - since the resale is so good, it is more easy to justify a new car....but....

I found a nice clean 2003 MCS (14k miles) and I'm thinking about grabbing it instead.

The owner says the car has the "Sports Package". I have two questions:

1) What is the "Sports Package" for 2003?
2) Was the Limited Slip Differential available for 2003?
3) How can I tell that this particular car has a LSD?

Thanks to all in advance!

LSD didn't come out until late 04 (I believe as an option on the 05 models.) Reading thru notes at motoringfile.com, the factory LSD could not be retrofitted so the car most likely does not have LSD.

Sorry, can't help with the "S" sports package.

Only 14K miles on a 4 year old MINI ??!!??

Buy that poor MINI... NOW... and set it free !

Found this...

Other options are grouped into packages: The Sport Package ($1250) includes Dynamic Stability Control, rear spoiler, fog lamps, sport seats, and larger alloy wheels.

Thanks to all for the rapid replies!

For you owners without LSD, do you miss it? With DSC activated? With DSC de-activated? Is it a one-tire wonder like I recall the early SRT-4's to be?

Slight correction... those sports package features are, I think, for the Cooper, not the Cooper S. The Cooper does not have the spoiler, so that would have been a sport package add-on. The rest of the features, are correct I think, but should also include the bonnet stripes.

Ask the owner...

...what the "Sports" package contains. It's a good question to put on your "list of things to ask," regardless of what you learn on this forum. He/she may have the sticker or other document that spells it out.

I believe it would also not be beyond a dealer to offer some "special" bundle of options/features and call it "Sports".

Skobie, welcome to the forum, don't forget you can call any mini service shop and get a list of options on just about any mini. You can also call 888-ASK-MINI and get some info as well.
Good luck!

That's correct, also sport seats are standard on an S. I don't know about 2003, but in 2006 the sports package for S was this: DSC, bonnet stripes (optional), 17" S-Lite wheels, front fogs, xenon headlights.

That is what I have on my 03 S. (sept I had to go in after and put the bonnet stripes on. the smuck i got it from didn't put anything on it except a lot of freeway miles.)

the 03 sport pacakage consisted of:

1. dynamic stability control
2. Front Fog lights
3. 17 s lite wheels (your choice of performance or all season tires)
4. Xenon headlamps
5. Bonnet stripes (if customer wanted them)

The sport packages for all 2002 to 2006 cooper S's was the same.

vdubdoug you are correct on the sports package.
Skobie, I bought a used '04 MCS and I love it. The mileage you qoute is great, like a new car. If the price is right, I'd go for it!

When I found my '04 MINI at Morristown, I was naming the packages it had to motoring advisor. He found it amusing... If the MINI you're looking at has all the options you want, go for it. That's what I did. KOOPA had the sports, premium, and cold weather packages, and rear fog light, so i was set. Life's too short not to own a MINI.
