I wonder if this can be programmed for older models. Hmmm...

Why would you want a digital speedo in the tach?

its on the bottom part of the tach
so people dont have to look over at the big speedo in the dash

for me i like looking over a bit
but a digi speedo would be cool

I would think that a digital speedo in the tach would take away from the perceived fondness for the centered mounted speedo espoused by so many on MCO. I once stated that I personally didn’t care much for the center mounted speedo and was attacked and questioned as to why I even bought a MC. One of my main motivations for getting the Nav was getting the speedo located next to the tach behind the steering wheel. It appears that MINI has conceded that the center mounted speedo may have its charm but is not the most ergonomic location. I wonder if cars equipped with Nav will also have the digital speedo located in the tach.

I wonder if I get my MCS built before december if I can go to the dealer and have them replace the steering wheel with the new one free of charge, even if there is a charge I'd still like to do it if possible.

You can ask but I don't think they will do it. If they order a replacement steering wheel then they will charge you for the part and the labor I would think unless you can cut a deal with your sales advisor. The other option is to buy the car at a time when the right steering wheel will be standard.

Odds are that it WOULD be possible to upgrade an O2 or 03 MINI to provide the digital speed readout and instantaneous mpg...since these are software functions, and as has been pointed out in other threads (use the search function to find) that particular data is stored on the computer but simply not reported (in an 02 or 03). That said, there will come a time when MINI refuses to "upgrade" older cars to the specs of new models. Just because it's technically possible doesn't mean that the marketing folks will allow it...hey, they're a car company...there's got to be some reason to get you to want to trade in and upgrade.

Anyhow, re. the speed/instantaneous mpg...that'll only be useful info if they ALSO make changes to get the computer more accurate. See the many threads about inaccurate MINI computers. I find that mine is off 2 or 3 mpg regularly (that's over 10% inaccuracy) and the "avg speed" function is also off. What good will the data be if it's inaccurate?

Oh yeah, my clock loses about a minute a month too. Again, known problems...

The digital speed on the tach caught my eye, but most of all its the rear fog light possibilities, for the cars.

The center mounted speedo is perfect where it is! Personally, I don't even notice myself when I look over at it, but for anyone who has problems turning your head, can't you figure out your speed by reading the tack and knowing what gear you're in? That's what I do most of the time.
But I can see how the digital speed readout would be useful for knowing your exact speed, since there are no half dash marks between say the 60 and 70 dashmarks on the speedometer.

I read somewhere that the 3 spoke wheel won't be an available option if your MCS has the sport package #2 with the steering wheel mounted controls.

It will be available for both the MC and MCS in either regular or MFSW versions starting on 12/01/03 builds.

Not that I personally want the digital speed readout, but I do wonder if it'll be as accurate as the original speedometer?

As opposed to a thermometer in the tach?

No. My query refers to the need for two speed displays. MINI's with Nav do not have the temp display in the tach; it is on the OBC page on the center mounted Nav screen. As I am sure you are aware, MINI’s with Nav have the speedo located next to the tach behind the steering wheel and I seriously doubt that they will get the digital speedo display when it becomes available on the '04 models. What the vehicles equipped with Nav need is a coolant temp gauge instead of an idiot light.
