Am considering buying a MINI S; however, upon reading all the postings regarding broken windshields, hestitation upon acceleration, misc cosmetic defects upon delivery, oil consumption, etc., the MINI may not appear to be a quality product. Perhaps the issues are not nearly as prevalent as the volume of postings would seem to indicate... Additionally, noted are beefs regarding Chrysler's involvement (joint venture) in the development of the powerplant. Being a former owner of BMW products, I have some trouble accepting that BMW would not provide a quality motor.

Please either affirm these fears as valid or prove them to be false as it looks to be a great and highly desirable car!

As has been discussed in another thread today ("reliability concerns&quot, the problems tend to sound more prevalent than they are because people are more likely to post a complaint than to say "yup, my MINI has no problems."

I would venture to say that "yes" for the most part, however keep in mind that in internet message boards people post whatever the want and sometimes the information can not be verified as either fact or fiction.

Also, people that have problems tend to post and complaint the most. You will rarely see posts saying "My car worked great today, I had no problems".

Keep in mind that there are over 30K MINIs in American roads so the amount of complaints here only represents a very small statistical sample of owners outthere.

I have known owners of troublefree MINIs (Myself included 10K+ miles and 11 months of ownership '02 Cooper CVT) and others that have had repeated problems.

I think that MINI has been very responsive with most teething issues about the car and they do monitor these sites day in and day out.

Car's are man made machines and the perfect car doesn't exist. If you look into almost every manufacturer car websites there is always a pool of disgruntled owners...it happens from Yugo to Bentley....

The MINI is the equivalent of automotive NIRVANA. The most fun, well built and highest resale value car in the industry, period.

I am going for a second MINI, a '04 MCS that should be arriving in October.

Welcome and enjoy!

Sure the Mini may have a few problems like any new model car...but the engine is not one of them. The engine is rated as one of the best 4 cyclinders availible,it's just the chip that needs some tweaking.

Here's my MINIs history for the first year and 29000+ miles

If you're squeamish you might not want to read that.

Keep in mind that experience is for me MINI only and a lot of those issues were fixed later in the '02 and '03 builds. I wouldn't have reservations about buying a new production MINI even given all the issues I've had.

This reminds me of that one walgreens commercial. They tell about the ppl who live in the town named Perfect. They end the commercial by saying that we don't live anywhere near Perfect (so come to walgreens...blah blah). This sort of applys to the MINI, and for that matter, other cars. Cars that are mass produced are bound to have problems. Sometimes they are few and far between, but not perfect.

My MINI is great though .

Here's the thing, jblow... Yesterday I got in my MINI and it started fine, It drove great! It didn't stumble, nothing broke, and nothing fell off of it. I had a great time, but I didn't come home and post that news on the list.

Now, if I'd had a problem, I would have posted and asked for additional information from anyone who had a similar problem. So the problem posts you see are way out of proportion to the number of people who have problems, and the number of problems that they have.

Also keep in mind that its a fairly new model, *and* its aimed at a group of folks who drive !hard! Given those two factors, I think the MINI has proven to be a very dependable vehicle. I'm thrilled with mine. I've driven more powerful cars, but never had more fun.

I've owned my MCS since May 28, 02. It has 20k on it and I've had 2 small problems. Coolant tank leak and cold start problem. Both fixed by the dealer right away. The biggest problem I have is trying to keep the wheels clean(brake dust). This is the most fun you can have with a car. Go for it.

Hi JB,

I have a 02' Mini with approximately 10,000 miles, w/ no problems. The car is really fun to drive and you will be constantly answerinbg questions concerning it. Good luck..
