Wood around sunroof?!

I was gassing up my MCS the other day with my sunroof open, taking advantage of the 60F+ day here in Ohio and noticed something strange:

In front of the sunroof there is wood that appears to be attached to the rails of the sunroof. I just found this to be very odd... why wouldn't MINI use metal or plastic?! Anyways, just wanted to put this out there to see if anyone else had noticed this bit of wood!

Yes, and I dislike it.

I noticed the same thing on my 2005.

FWIW, the current Corvette have balsa wood composite in the floorboards.

Its fine by me. I noticed as well but I think its better than having more plastic. Although I wonder what happens when moisture builds up?....Let's all check in 10 years and see how much rust it has yaaaaay!

balsa composite is a bit different though, because its protected on either side by a laminate layer of carbon or fiberglass. having wood out in the open though, thats outright dumb at this day and age!

Yes, noticed it on our 2006 MC and don't much care for it...kinda "shadetree mechanic-like". However, in recent 8.5" rain event over three days last week, no apparent ill effects from it...go figure.
