Looking for some transportation help.....
Looking for some transportation help.....
First off, hello to all you lucky dogs living in Hawaii!
I am a NAM/MU forum regular, and am hoping someone here can help me out. I am a reserve doc and will Mob to Tripler the first of April through the end of June. Docs get lucky and are 90 days "boots on the ground".
What I am looking/praying for is some help from the locals in finding some transportation while I am there. A rental vehicle is not authorized in my orders, nor is shipping my MINI, like I would do that for the short term anyway.....
Anyone have a connection or lead on a way for me to get ANY wheels while I am there? It would be great if I could find a descent vehicle, but I will take anything with an engine. Even a 2 wheeled ride would work. I just don't want to be stuck/stranded in the Tripler guest house for 3 months and not have the chance to meet the local MINI crowd while I am there, let alone get out to, oh, I don't know, maybe enjoy the island/city....plus maybe meet those needs of getting to the movies, grocery store, etc.....
Anyone help out? I am a very safe, "older" guy with no need for a flashy ride, just something...got plenty of references if there is concern I will mess up someones car......
And BTW, here are a couple shots of what I am leaving behind:

Looks like you're leaving some cool toys behind!
The best suggestion I can offer at this point would be to check out the local Craigslist section. There's always a buncha "island cars" there for sale.
(and holy bajeezus your tint is dark!)

Some ideas.
Rental car is out.
Craigslist is good for Hawaii and it's possible to find-
used beach car for sale cheap (you'll have to pay insurance, and be able to sell the car after your stay)
Used motorcycle (insurance and sell)
Used Moped just to get around
Otherwise the bus is good for getting around without driving
Used bicycle is also possible
One of the MINI drivers can give you a lift to any of the MINI events
See the website for Hawaii MINI Motoring club to see the events planned during your stay.
If someone has an extra car that might seem possible but the liability will still be considerable for the legal owner. Insurance and your short stay are factors.
I like the Moped idea since cost is fairly low and Hawaii is small so you don't have to travel very far.
Public buses do allow for bikes to be hung from a rack on the front of the bus if needed- this is common. Just need a helmet for use with the bike and any functional used bike would work. If interested I might be able to find you a loaner bike (my brother may have some spares in working order). No cost on the loaner and you just need to pick up a basic helmet ($25) and bike lock.
