R56 Insurance rate differences between MC and MCS?
Insurance rate differences between MC and MCS?
I was just curious what the insurance rate differences were between the Cooper and the Cooper S. I'm currently paying around $77 per month on my Cooper and am wondering if that would go up dramatically if I were to switch to an S. I know every insurance company is different, just looking for an average.
Insurance is so dependant on variables that it's hard to compare. I'd say you would probably have a slight bump because the MCS is likely more expensive but it wouldn't be too much.
I'm in NJ and I pay about 130/mth but I have a limited driving history in the US (only been driving here for 2.5 yrs) so the rate is higher even though I'm 30.

I'm going to call my agent later when I get a moment and find out definitively, I just thought if someone happened to know how they compare, it might make things less surprising!
THANK YOU !!!!
Finally somebody besides me realizes this !
And you're also right, there will be a slight increase for the "S" but you can't predict how much because of all those variables. The increase is due to the value of the car, the extra horses, and potentially (I'm guessing because I don't have access to the actuarial data) a higher cost to repair.

I'd just like to point out that you guys should be ecstatic with the rates you've got down there. For me here in Ontario, the best rate going is $2626/yr. That's right, over $215 a month. That's with being a 25 year old male, driving since 16, with no accidents in a 2004 Acura TSX.
It's one of the bigger reasons why I can't even afford a MINI yet.

Wow, I suppose I do feel fortunate. I actually just remembered that I recently opted for higher deductible ($1200 as opposed to $750) and I'm now paying $65/month. Hopefully, if I do decide to switch to an S, it won't raise too much.
Btw, I'm a 25 yo male with a clean driving record.

I didn't realize one can opt for such a high deductible. With LM I'm pretty sure the highest we can go is $1000; I'm at $500.
Discounts may apply depending on your insurance company and your situation:
Male or female.
The age of the driver.
The miles expected to be driven in one year
The purpose for use of the car (weekends only, pleasure vs commuting)
The discounts for multiple cars, accident free, Driver's ed, good student, etc
Urban vs non urban area
Less than $70 per month is good in my area for an MCS.
Car registration cost also varies in price from state to state or country.
Age and weight of the car usually factors.

When calculating your insurance rates, the insurance company uses something called a "Star Table" (forgive me if I've used the wrong term, but it's from memory), where every car has a certain number rating. This number is used as a factor multiplier. I believe the MCS is something like 21, and the MC is 18. For comparison purposes, I think the Honda Civic is a 14. Something like that.....
^ Add several more things to that list, but it's a good start.
**Territory code (even within a rural area or urban area, there are further breakdowns)
**IRG (Insurance Rating Group), a factor assigned to every year, make and model of vehicle that takes into consideration such things as the vehicles statistical history of being involved in accidents and the cost to repair the vehicle.
**The Underwriting Score of the exposures (Household Drivers). Takes into consideration your driving history and credit score, among others.
So yeah, as I've been trying to say... don't try to compare insurance rates, even withing age groups and genders. It's a waste of time.

I spoke with my agent yesterday. After getting my hopes up with the comment "there should be no difference," he then found out there actually was a $16 increase?!?!?!?! Kidding, it's a little more than I anticipated - about another $100 every 6 months - but nothing near to what I feared. My low rates are due to many discounts, including the educator's discount (I'm a teacher).
With $500 deductible for collision on 08 MCS = $225/6 mo. On 07 MC w/$250 deductible for collision= $ 230/6 mo. here in Iowa.
I would lke to add : aren't we luck here to have members like CR&PW&JB that can enlighten us on all the different insurance aspects of Happy Motoring! Thank You!

See now, THOSE are good insurance rates.
By the way, just in case it was lost in my initial post, I wasn't looking for a specific number on what I'd be paying, I was looking for the average difference between the two models. Regardless of age and driving history, this difference should average out to be roughly the same. It seems like they do average out to be about the same too from what those who've posted real numbers seem to be saying. As a generic statement, I think saying "The MCS will be between $50-150 more per 6 months." is a fair assessment.

Hah, okay. I guess I was just hoping to hear that it didn't suddenly jump to what a more sportier car would cost - or rather what insurance companies consider to be sports cars. Hopefully we'll continue slipping under that radar for a while!
