Mirror caps different for folding mirrors

My 08 is at the dealer and I will be picking it up on Saturday. One interesting note - I have the power folding mirrors because they were included in one of the packages. The dealer has not seen many with the folding mirrors and discovered that the standard checkered mirror caps do not fit them. They ordered a set for me, but I wanted to pass the information along to every one here.

Is there a chance they were trying to fit 1st gen mirror caps on to your 2nd gen mirrors?

I'd hate to think a dealer would mess something like that up, but I can't bring myself to believe that MINI would necessitate having two versions of the same mirror caps to accommodate a small minority of cars with power folding mirrors.

Extra injection molding tools + tracking two extra part numbers.... no way would BMW/MINI deal with those extra costs. there's no reason folding mirrors can't be designed to use the same mirror caps as the standard mirrors.

The more of this I type, the more I think (hope) that your dealer messed up.

Sounds odd. The non power folding mirror still fold, you have to do it manually.

I have power folding mirrors on my 07 with factory chrome mirror caps.

No problems or issues. maybe they have mixed up the r53 and r56 caps?

The dealer said their are different part numbers for the mirror caps with and without the folding mirrors. Folding mirrors are not common in our area, but I'm sure there will be more of them now that they are part of a package.

I agree. If the would have been included in the cold weather package, my car would have received them. I've never needed to fold a mirror in on any car I've owned (manually or electrical) so I skipped adding that feature to the build.

That does seem strange. The mirror caps for the R53 are the same for the power and non-power versions.

Anyone care to elucidate the differences?

I'll check tomorrow to see if we have any power-fold caps in stock. I can access the ETK from here at home and there are definitely two different part numbers.
RealOEM shows both caps under the same option code of S313A which is incorrect, a first that I have found on realoem.com.

EDIT: I was using the checkered caps as a reference...

...the 117 and 120 caps are actually the ones for power-fold.

Well, no R56 power-fold caps in stock. I'll have to wait until we have one in the shop to check it out.
