R50/53 Am I the ONLY one that really wants JUST a Cooper?
I keep reading over and over in the posts of people that either have or idolize the Cooper S. I feel like i am the only one that is not in the least bit interested in having one. All i want is a Coop. Black...very plain and simple.
Are you asking a rhetorical question or are you interested in buying a cooper?
Marketplace is for buying and selling only.
The answer to your question is that in general roughly half of the MINIs now sold in the us are MCS.
Which means that there are many many many MC out there (roughly half of those are CVT).
MCS may get the hype and press but people buy both MINI models and CVT sells quite well too.

>>NO!
Exactly. The cooper has alot going for it. A reasonable car at a more reasonable price than the MCS.
You can do alot with the cooper in base form. You can enjoy all of the joys of owning a cooper and you have the option of CVT which is incompatible with the power of an MCS at this time. So if you have a cooper here are some good things about it.
1. You CAN drive it fast and corner fast- it is a go kart- it weighs less and the stock wheels are lighter- great fun
2. You CAN drive the car immediately even if you don't drive manual transmission- No waiting for fun to happen. You'll need the CVT for the full fun.
3. You CAN order lots of chrome- Looks good, Also no bonnet scoop.
4. You CAN order nearly everyother major upgrade option from the factory-sport, premium, cold weather, sunroof, Harmon Kardon, Xenons, etc
5. You CAN get better gas mileage than the MCS and a bunch of other small cars- but you still have the fun.
6. You CAN enjoy just as much interior space/comfort as any cooper
7. You CAN race it and do performance mods to the intake, ECU, suspension, exhaust, header, brakes, and wheels to name a few.
8. You CAN do appearance upgrades to the interior and exterior as much as you want
9. You CAN choose many great colors that look absolutely great and even some that will be rare in the future.
10. You CAN have just as many MINI friends no matter which model you drive. As long as out car keys are pregnant we are buddies.
Now wasn't that painless?
And by the way I have an MCS. Which I like. Won't you be my friend?

Nope.
I got my Cooper while waiting to order an S. When the time came to place an order, I gave it alot of thought and realized that for many reasons, I'd rather keep my MC. I don't regret the choice one bit!

I've driven both a Cooper & an S & must agree both are great handling cars. But I'm sure you've read many posts here & on MINI2 many Cooper owners trade in the Coops for S's after a while. Why? Because power is ADDICTIVE!!!

Thanx Guys. I am actually going for a 5-Spd. I think i have figured out what really makes the difference to me and it's really minor, but important to me. It's all about the bumpers. If i could (cost effectivly) get an MCS with the Cooper bumpers and chrome (i like lots of chrome) i think i would really have to have an MCS.
But i have found a combination of options that i like and that i can afford in a Coop and really having driven both i kinda have a soft spot for the under dog blah blah blah... I can't really explain it.

have to admit it...i'm kinda starting to think about getting the 'S. but i really love my silk green/black roof.
if couldn't have gotten SG/B, i would have gone with pepper white/black. now that i hear it's coming out in the 'S, i'm kinda considering...

I have no desire to get an "S". I like the Cooper much better from the second I saw it. Dont like the hood scoop on the "S". Also like the gas mileage and a lot of the reason miniHune listed. The car is still very quick and at every MINI meet my Cooper is right the *** of the S in front of me as we take the twisties. On a straightaway they might win...but who cares? If I wanted a drag racing car I would have bought a Mustang Cobra (which even the S cant beat off the line).
you know i haven't seen the ITJob yet. everyone who's seen it has raved about the stars - the 3 mini's. correct me if i'm wrong, but i believe there were 2 MC and 1 MCS. MC's were PW/B and IB/W? MCS was CR/W? i know i've seen the previews. the PW/B MC just caught my eye. especially with the black bonnet stripes/strips. and they all seemed to be rather close in street performance, that is, in the movie.
i guess the main reason why i'm considering it is that i drive everyday about 20-28 mile one way to work. the first 1/2 is basically traffic stuff. the next 1/2 is basically open road, including a decent uphill climb for a good 5 miles. that is where i feel a MCS would make a difference. the MC is more than adequate, but i can feel the limit in those instances.
i guess it's similar to car stereo, you want more than adequate power because you don't wanna hit the strain zone where the speakers become distorted. in this case, i don't really wanna hear the strain of the MC engine? does that make sense?

I rode in 3 MINI's the other night - my 5 speed MC, an MCS and a CVT. They all had distinct traits, and they were all quick. I like the looks of my car, sure, it would be great if it could smoke an EVO off the line, but I don't drive like that. When the Cooper is driven properly, you can get power out of it. CVT or 5-speed. The handling of these cars is the main trait, and yes - the MCS is more mod friendly at this point. But as more Coopers enter the used market, you'll see more mods for that engine - only a matter of time.
I own an MCS and I must admit I like the look of the MC better in the front. The little chrome extras give it that classic look. When I purchased mine I compared the MC and MCS in options vs. cost and you got so much more with the MCS for very little money. First off, I new that if I bought an MC and wanted to add a turbo or supercharger to it in the future It would probably cost around $3,000 so I kept that in my mind when comparing the two. When I compared them I found an MC and an MCS where the MCS was $3000 more. But you got so much more with the MCS for that 3000 than just a Supercharger. The MCS had the leather, the MC had leatheret. The MCS had fog lamps, supercharger, headlight washers and the MC did not. The MC has a 5spd and the MCS has a 6spd. Some small differeces were the chrome gas cap on the MCS, the different side skirt, the small grills behind each front wheel, 17" wheels and runflats (thought at the time that was an advantage). Anyway, I know there was more differences that I can't even remember, but it seemed like alot of value for the price difference. Some people value things differently, if you not concerned about 0-60 performance and you would never consider installing a turbo or supercharger then the MC is probably for you. Both great/fun cars.
I chose the MC for the ride. The MCS was just too stiff for an everyday driver. I also have the Cosmos Black, (not available in the S), with Tartan Red and Anthracite interior, (also not available in the S), and I get many compliments on the combo.

My name is MGCMAN and I'm a horsepower junkie. I drive the MC and although I found it adequate, the availability of a similar car with 50% more hp for only a $3,000.00 premium, sealed its fate. To quote Oscar Wilde, "I can resist anything, except....temptation." Drive both the MC and MCS, then just try to keep those extra 3k in your wallet. MUAHAHAHAHAHAH!
My standard MC vs MCS comment is... City Driving? Go for a MC, and get yourself some nice options... Open/Highway/Country Driving? Get the MCS, you'll love having the extra power when slow cars get in front of you... I was going to get a MC first (I was actually two letters away from getting a pre-spec IB/W MC right when they came out) (oh, and the two letters were O.K.
) because I first liked the look of the MC better. But when I ordered my own spec'd car (a few months later), I test drove a MCS first, (I had only drove a MC before) and realized how much fun and use I'd get out of the extra power. But like I said above, if I was going to be doing a lot of inner city/stop and go type driving, I would have saved the cash.

HI,NO YOU ARE NOT.ALL I WANTED WAS A MINI.AND I FINALLY GOT ONE.A YELLOW ONE WITH A WHIT ROOF.I LOVE IT.EVERYTHING I TELL SOMEONE I HAVE ONE THEY SAY "DID YOU GET THE S"I TELL THEM I'M HAPPY WITH WHAT I HAVE.HOPE TO HERE FROM YOU SOON.
I wouldn't trade for an S. Fuel economy is important to me, $3000 is handy for other things, skipping CDs drive me insane so I like the 15" wheels, and the front end of the car just looks soooo much better in my opinion... There are other reasons as well, but those were the big ones for me.
I'd also worry about the longevity of the engine with a supercharger; I'd like to drive this car for 150k miles, if possible, and if the maintenance costs don't drive me to sell long before then.

We have a bone stock '02 Cooper. Only options we got were the CVT transmission and the MFSW. The rest is standard issue.but the car is still a blast to drive. I agree in that the Cooper has much cleaner lines and the chrome gives the car a sophisticated, classy looks. Many people think we paid over $30K for our Cooper CVT.....(The Pepper White/Black top aids on this perception).
However, since we already have a Cooper, I decided this time around to add another one in the "wilder side"....a '04 MCS.
Oh and since I really dig the front chrome grille, now I can order my MCS with a factory 3 slats full chrome grille instead of the painted one. I am planning on adding the chrome exterior mirror caps as well.
You can't go wrong with either, but rest assured the Cooper is a highly desirable automotive piece. Most of the MINIs I see are MC's.

I am with you on that one, I wanted a cooper not an s because I like more chrome on the car. In my case chrome trumped horse power. I find the cooper has more then enough power for me, the ride is a little softer it was a better fit for what I wanted.
The S is a great car if I was more into performance I would like it more but for me the cooper is it.

The only reason I bought an S was that I wanted to race it. In my opinion, the standard Cooper is much more driveable for "around town" stuff.
Nuttin' wrong with not getting an S, from an S owner!

I ordered mine a couple of weeks ago and I get asked that question all the time. For now I reallly just want the base Cooper. Although what I ordered was far from base! I have a long commute and a 13 month old. I needed good gas mileage. I also thought the suspension might be too tight for my son.
As my son gets older and my insurance points drop
I may move into a MCS.
