I covered mine with a hand towel from the hotel I am staying at. That did not help. The metal just heats up as the interior temp rises..ARRGGHHH.

Get the sunshield! I have a UUC Motorwerks **** in stainless and that would melt my hand like a terminator in a smelt pot, but with the sunshield, car stays cool. Got rear tints as well.

I wonder if a sun reflective material can be used to fashion a cover for the **** when parked?
http://www.dcpindia.com/refprod.htm
http://www.co-excorp.com/machr.htm
or find a reflective mylar material suitable to fashion into a cover.

I cover mine with the detailing towel I keep in the passenger compartment. At least it doesn't get the full-force of the PHX sun! I've left it off once or twice and I can tell you even though the metal rises to the temp of the inside of the car, with direct sun, it seems to be hotter!

There are more options. If you keep your **** and it is metal then cover it. Maybe a reflective material, maybe cloth or leather. Park in the shade and maybe point your car in such a way as to keep the roof over the **** in the afternoon or whenever you will be re entering the car. Maybe this is too much to think about but if you always tend to park in the same area of the lot each day you will notice the patterns of sun movement.

I have a Momo shifter that is part chrome and part carbon fiber. I never have a hot **** problem. Most of the time I take the car out at lunch or well into the dark hours. I try not to park outdoors when at home.

If your shifter is wood or non metal then you might do better than those ***** that are only metal.
If you don't mind shopping for golf club covers then there are some nice ones out there- some so cute that I might add one for the fun of it! Most of these are under $15 Think functional stuffed toys
Sea Otter?

Shark? Like Finding Nemo!

Tiger?

And my favorite-

Kiwi Golf Club Cover
The Little Spotted Kiwi, Kiwipukupuku, is one of New Zealand's four species of Kiwi. Kiwis are unique in that they have no wings or tail, they have nostrils at the tip of their bill and they lay the largest egg of all birds in proportion to their body size. The Little Spotted Kiwi is now a threatened species.
$39.50 New Zealand dollars -whatever that means???

I have a Whalen, I just throw one of those foam insulated can coolers over it when parked and after being in the sun all day it feels hot, but not too hot. Avoiding direct sunlight on the **** is the biggie. Window tint and a windshield sunshade definitely help. If I forget to cover it, I pull out my Oakley's sunglasses bag and throw that on for the drive until the A/C has cooled the ****. Having a Whalen, it's very easy to remove and replace daily, but I don't feel that it's necessary as long as it's kept covered. When I had the stock **** it was easy enough to avoid touching the chrome ring by holding the lower part of the sphere while shifting.

greg67's insulated can holder idea reminded me of something I'd seen at WalMart - I picked one up today. It's called a "Neoprene Multi-Purpose Holder" and it was in the automotive section. It's a neoprene bag that comes with plastic parts meant for hanging it on a vent or something similar. It'll hold and insulate a cold can or hold glasses, cell phone, etc. Without the plastic bits, the bag fits right over the gear shift ****. You can take it off when you get in the car or, because it's an insulating neoprene fabric bag, you can drive with it on until things cool down a bit.

Cost = $1.97.

I went out and bought a digital thermometer to test the AC and interior temps inside the car.
When I left work on Friday, the inside temp read 139 degrees!!!!!!
That metal shift **** is hot. I forget to put my ESPN hat over it sometimes
and I tell you what, OUCH!
I have just decided to replace it.
I got a deal on some MOMO shift *****.
I am going to go with a Black and Yellow leather one to bring some color inside.

Not surprising, and not a MINI-specific function. This is why we're always cautioned about the dangers of keeping living things (pets, children) confined in parked car interiors...and the fact that most folks are surprised at how hot it can get in there is why some goodly number of kids and pets are baked every year.

Agro, I'm not sure if I can get more than one.
But the MOMOs range from $75 or $100 or more.
I get it for $50, delivered as part of my sponsorship.
On the MOMO website, they show some sweet black and yellow ones.
I forgot the style number, but I think it looks sweet.
I'm also considering adding the matching e-brake handle to match.
Send me a PM. I'll see what I can do.

To "HOT" of a deal to pass up.

Same deal for me, the **** was way too hot, SO bought a MOMO F16 Silver and Carbon ****. Install was a breeze, looks great ! and no more sweaty palms, at least from **** temps. Now when it comes to rippin around in traffic on the highway, thats another story ........... that coupled with the short shift kit makes shifting a dream.
