I was at a party and this guys asks me, "Is that your MINI outside?" I said yeah, then he asked everyone and said, "Isn't that a "poor man's beamer"? I got a little offended and just said, I don't know what you're talking about but my car drive s nothing like a beamer. He was holding a big bottle of Corona, so I didn't even worry about what he was saying.

Anyone else encounter these comments? Do I not know something?

Fortunately for us, they're right! It is a poor man's beamer. But can you tell me of any other BMW that outhandles a MINI?

So, does he drive a "poor man's" Acura, Lexus, Infiniti or Cadillac? You could make the case for any of those. And the Poor Man versions of those cars are nothing like a poor man's BMW. By the way, why spend more money and get a lesser car like a BMW?? I'd rather keep the money.

Actually I think it's a remarkably well equipped BMW.

Soon to be the last good looking BMW.

I guess you didn't let him drive the Mini. Had a similar experience this weekend with a bunch of young execs from my company, talking about their BMW 330is or whatever. Then the conversation turned to my Mini. I let one of them take a drive around the block and he was "OMG, this car is so tight." No disparaging remarks after that.

I tend to ignore disparaging remarks made at the MINI, since I usually shut people up when I drive it. There is also the "so I drive a MINI, what are you compensating for?" school. But for people really looking for a reaction, I generally invite them to enjoy the act of fornication with themselves, turn up the stereo and drive off.

Did this guy drive a BMW? It seems like some of the snobbier bmw drivers out there really can't stand the mini. They're probably just upset that we got such a great car for so much less than what they paid. Then there are the more intellegent bmw drivers, like my stepdad, who drives an '89 M3 and thinks the mini is the coolest thing I ever did!

IT IS NOT THE MONEY IN YOUR POCKET, ITS THE SMILE ON YOUR FACE THAT MATTERS IN THIS LIFE.

You could have all the money in the world, and be unhappy, or have enough for a MINI and be rich in life.

Not likely. For some unfathomable reason the cars are called, "Bimmers." The motorcycles are called, "Beemers."

So we get hostility from Bimmer owners 'cause our cars are less expensive. Think the hostility from the original Mini owners could be the reverse? They don't like us because we're driving the Rich Man's Mini?

I know they're less expensive than godforsaken BMWs, but I have a hard time labelling a car that starts, base, at just above 16k a "poor mans" anything.

Small penises make men say the strangest things...

The most jumped-up, toffe-nosed, nouveau-riche poseurs I have ever heard of were in the Honda Goldwing club someone I met was in. Old Harley riders are cherished by Harley clubs. Someone with a pre-WWII BMW with Steib sidecar gets swarmed by other Beemer riders at a club meet. He was told to either leave the club or buy a replacement for his 12 year-old Goldwing as having him in the club lowered, "the tone." He left the club.

A Goldwing with all the accessories would probably run you more than a Cooper S with all the upgrades.

I've been insulted ALOT recently by a person on another board that says they drive an NSX and thinks he's real cool because of it. I've found that people either really really like our cars or REALLY dislike them. And that's fine. MINIs aren't for everyone. Thank goodness. And besides....I would be willing to put money on the fact that the guy who said that to you drove some boring piece of crap.

I don't let other people bother me. If they want to be hateful, that's their problem.

Coulda had a much more expensive car... but, when I drove a Mini for the first time, I knew it was the right car for me. Great fit and finish, excellent handling, panache you just don't get with any other humdrum car out there...

I think people make off comments because they just don't get it. IMHO, we're part of a car fraternity that most people just CAN'T understand... I take pride in my ride, and LOVE the fact that there aren't that many out there and that it's unique. Some people like driving Camrys...

Borrowing from the Jeepers I used to hang around with...

It's a Mini thing... you wouldn't understand.

And - opinions are like... you fill in the rest.

YA

Its not the size of the ship that matters,
Its how long you can keep it in port untill all the passengers properly disperse.

Oh, wait..

Is this the right conversation?

I remember Hunter S. talking about an old early 70s Honda motorcycle slogan, "The nicest people drive Hondas."

Comments like that are all rather silly. When people ask who makes it, I always respond MINI. That does tend to drive them crazy, but people don't call the new Rolls Royce a BMW so why should our's be treated differently? Seriously, BMW's are clearly German in execution and MINI's are clearly British.

In any event, I haven't heard a negative comment about my car since I bought it so I guess I've been lucky.
