Rooms
The best place to stay is Fontana Village. The bad part is that it is booked. If you know people who are going you could possibly get some floor space in a cabin and help split costs for the weekend. This is what the Chicago MINI Motoring Club did for the last few years. An air mattress and a sleeping bag is a small price to pay to be in the middle of the action.
Go to www.fontanavillage.com for all of the information on the main site for the event. You'll hear people tell you its all booked and you can't get a room. While that is technically true now, people cancel reservations often due to various reasons. Right up until the week of the event there was space available due to people cancelling.
If you want to stay in the Village you should call the reservations line and get your name on the waiting list so that they'll call you once there are enough openings to reach you. And read these forums every day because people will post if they want to cancel their reservations because if they find someone to take the room they don't have to pay the cancellation fee.
And there are lots of other places to stay in the County. They're a good drive away but it's a very enjoyable drive.
