R56 Roof Rack Owners

If you ordered the new roof rack when you "built" your new MINI, did you get anything in the kit that allows you to close up the mounting slots in the roof sheet metal when you pull the rack off?

There are thingys described in the roof rack manual as a "body cap" that looks like it'd plug into the slots, but they didn't come with my kit's parts when I took delivery last April.

My rack had been mounted at the dealership (along with the carrier pod I ordered for extended travels) but those "caps" were nowhere to be found.

Dealer seems clueless - after six months :impatient - about this, after I've made many, many inquiries.

Winter's nearly here; I'd like to pull the racks & close up those slots to keep the road salt used around here out.

Not to hijack the thread, but if someone with a roof rack could post some photos with your answer, I'd love to see how it mounts to the roof. I've got the factory rack for the R53 and really want to know how this part has changed for the new models.

You Need A Wrench...

..supplied in the Rack Mount Kit to crank the two metal fingers (arrows pointing to them here) either together or apart, depending on whether you're taking the rack off or putting it on.

My rack's been mounted since April, I'd lover to take it off for the winter months but don't want road salt getting in the open mount slots.

If you look at the installation instructions for the roof rack the dealer removed the roof liner and caps with special tools supplied with the rack. I would guess you should get the liner piece and caps to fill in the hole in the roof. look at the attached PDF file.

Oh I Asked For Any Parts...

... the day after I took delivery, when I went to remove the pod & rack for storage. (I'd asked them not to mount the rack as I wanted to store it away, not take delivery with it mounted.)

I got out the manual, saw the instructions about replacing the Body Caps, looked for them high and low in my brand spankin' New MINI but came up completely empty-handed.

I still haven't gotten a satisfactory explanation from the dealer about it, or an answer to my question to them: if those caps are even available?

Some months later they told me they were ordering a new rack kit to see if the Body Caps came with that; I contend they CAME ON THE MINI & likely as not the dealer installer tossed the pieces, thinking they weren't needed anymore.

Mine was probably the first "new model" rack they'd installed.

Yeah mine came with the 4 little black bits. Popped right in. Sorry about your problems with your dealer! They should be a bit more on top of their game with a piece as simple as these!
