Wood MINI??? MCS, MC, Clubman or Cabrio? (advice needed)
Wood MINI??? MCS, MC, Clubman or Cabrio? (advice needed)
Need some advice - and yes, this is a Cooper vs. Cooper S vs Clubman vs. Cabrio thread... :D
OK, so we've got the October 26-27 Gyminikhana events planned out (precision driving course, all-day driving privelages on the huge autocross and kart track, along with frisbee golf, Mini show, dinner, live band, and a Dance!), but I'm a little stuck on our "wooden mini" race.
I've already got an official (used) Pinewood Derby track and scorer, and 9 dozen pinecar kits that I'm bandsawing into (roughly) Mini shapes.
Question is, what shapes, and what %age of each?
- Mini Cooper S (with spoiler)? Looks great , a little harder to cut out
- Mini Cooper (without spoiler)? Looks great, easier to cut out, but no forced induction
- Clubman? (longer, heavier, unfair advantage due to weight)
- Cabrio? (PITA to cut out, light so it'll be slow, but hey, it's a cabrio!)
What %age of each should I cut out?
(yes, I'll sell some of the extras if there are any, and my kids are begging me to make the scraps into teardrop trailers... and I'll shoot some pics of the prototypes tomorrow...)
(for more Gyminikhana information, click the link in my sig, it's going to be a fun social and performance event in the Pittsburgh area... October 26-27!)
One of our sponsors is MiniDoMore - thanks Brent! - and a MiniDoMore hitch WILL be given away at the event! (I'm excited, please pardon the shameless plug...)

looks Cool
To make things even I would weigh each of them and glue a thin weight to the bottom. They should sell those at the same place you bought the kits. The placement of such weights can slightly change the way they run. So if you want you can have the people that are racing choose where to glue them on.
I always love doing these races as a kid.

Admittedly, it was difficult to avoid certain phrases since the event is being held at Beaver Run Motorsports park, and the terms "mini", "wood", and the location just didn't seem to get along... since it is a FAMILY event!
Now where were we? Oh yeah - percentages! I'm thinking (thanks Mini2Go) that I follow the sales percentages, do a dozen each of the Cabrio and Clubman, then 60% MCS, 40% MC. Sound OK? Almost time to get back to the bandsaw...
