R52.

Here's a quick "cheat sheet" for you, using USA models only (e.g. no MINI One, or MINI One D, or MINI Cooper D):

R50 - 1st Gen MINI Cooper coupe (2002-2006)
R52 - 1st Gen MINI Cooper convertible and MINI Cooper S convertible (2005-2008)
R53 - 1st Gen MINI Cooper S coupe (2002-2006)
R55 - 2nd Gen MINI Cooper Clubman and MINI Cooper S Clubman (2008+)
R56 - 2nd Gen MINI Cooper coupe and MINI Cooper S coupe (2007+)
R57 - 2nd Gen MINI Cooper convertible and MINI Cooper S convertible (2009+)

So, as you can see, except for the 1st Gen coupes, the same R code is used for both Cooper & Cooper S variants of a particular model.

Looking at this list and being overly obsessive over detail....Why no R51, R54 and why wouldn't they list the numbers in order of car introduction? Why is the Clubman that doesn't come out until next year an R55 the number before R56 which has already been introduced. Is there some reasoning behind this?

I think one of those is the Mini One and the is the diesel. Neither are available in the United States.

Yes, it's all a matter of history.

Wikipedia has it laid out nicely. Cant send you there on a link because to be honest I dont know how! But its great reading. Make sure you search both MINI and BMW MINI. Maybe someone can post a link for it.
