Ugh, got a nail in a run-flat

Not sure where I picked it up, but the tire inflation warning came on early in the week. Checked the tire and it was about 10 lbs. low. Reinflated it and it was back to 10 lbs. low in a couple of days.

I found a tire shop that was willing to try repairing it (not easy to do, for good reason, apparently), but the patch held for about 20 miles and then the tire went completely flat.

Okay, that was a PITA, but then I found out there are apparently none of these tires in the city of Omaha. I thought I had done my homework, but I definitely fell short in this one area.

I must say, the SA at MINI of Omaha is busting her behind for me, though. She is overnighting a tire from Chicago and got me a free rental (all of the loaners were out).

I still like the run-flats, they performed as advertised. My wife was driving it when it went totally flat and she was not stranded. Hopefully, availability will become wider of the new couple of years.

Also added the hazard insurance, it looks like a bargain, frankly.

I got a nail in one of my Goodyear runflats 2 weeks after picking up my new MCS. Goodyear's Europen website says the runflats are repairable just like any normal tire so I took it to Discount Tire to repair since I didn't buy the dealer's $750 tire/wheel warranty. They put it up on the rack and about a half hour later they came to me and said, "The bad news is, it's too close to the side wall to fix and a patch won't hold. The good news is, we went to order a new tire from Goodyear, and Goodyear is going to pay for it." I have no idea why they paid for it, and I wasn't about to question their generosity since the real cost of the tire would have been $260.

I believe the tire's warranty covers this type of problem. I had a similar event occur with a regular tire (non-runflat) and I had to pay a small amount because the tire was relatively new. In essence, the warranty is amortized so that the newer the tire, the less you pay. Since your tires were essentially brand new, the warranty covered the entire loss. Many people don't realize that the tire's factory warranty covers these types of events.

You're right, I had no idea the manufacturer's warranty would cover nails. I figured it would only cover actual defects in the tire. That makes the dealer's $750 tire warranty even more of a rip off.

That's good news for all of us with run flats. I was getting the impression that I should have an extra tire or two on hand, in case of a flat.

The warranty also covers the wheels, and if you have a nice dealership, tyrewall bulges as well, imo money well spent. In 4 years I believe you will easily get your money back. And no I don't work for the insurance company

That is very good to know. I'll make sure to remember that in case I get a nail in my brand new tires as well.

I got a nail in my 03 and my 07 runflats coincidently shortly after delivery on both. I brought both to local gas stations and they were able to plug the tire while still on the car . Cost about 10 dollars and off I went. I currently have 10,000 miles on my 07 and haven't had any problems since repair.

regarding the warranty that covers nails, are you talking about tires in general or just the run flat tires?

Thanks
