Post MINI Track day twisty road run 11/2/07

I had brought up in the MINI Track Day at THill on 11/1/07 thread that I am considering heading up to Red Bluff for the night after the track day and then doing a run of CA 36 out to the coast. Since there has been some interest from other people about possibly joining me, I figured I'd start a separate thread and leave the track day thread to be about the track day.

My original plan is just to take Friday off and have fun doing the East to West run of HWY 36 which is 140 miles of non-stop twisty nirvana. I'll probably make reservations at the Best Western in Red Bluff for Thursday night.

Given the number of awesome roads in that region, this could turn into a blast of a multi-day event. Input welcome.

Chime in if you are interested. Even if you're not doing the MINI track day, feel free to join in the fun on Friday 11/2!!!!

I'm gonna be a tentative maybe. I'm not much of a long distance driver so driving from Willows to Redbluff thru 36 and then back down to San Jose might be too much for me. All depends on how worn out I feel the next day after track. I might just say, hell with it, and stop by Cache Creek and lose a few dollars if I'm tired enough.

You're in Yreka, and the last time you did 36 was a couple of years ago.

Then again, you've got oodles of great roads near you.

Please join in the fun.

I'm thinking that it would be best to spend Thursday night in Willows before heading out to Hwy 36.. Gona be dark when we get off the track, less stuff to take out to the track, Red Bluff is only 30-40mi up the road, have a few drinks/dinner.....then hit the road in the am.
Any thoughts. I haven't made my reservation for Wednesday night yet.
I guess this means.......I'M IN...

Willum, even if you start early in the morning... its still going to be a long day in the car. Are you planning on going all the way to Modesto or spend the night on 101 somewhere.

Let me know if you are in Healdsburg area around dinner time... maybe a few locals could meet up with you guys somewhere for dinner.

"Have suitcase will travel" Don't have a plan for Friday night, but it definately won't be in Modesto. I'll give you a call if I end up in that area.
thanks,

Willows to Red Bluff is 46.5mi as of last Friday in the very early morning hours. Doubt that it will change in the next few weeks....
I have reservations at the Best Western in Willows for Thursday night.
So, do we have a roll call as to who is onboard for this excursion?
1. willum
2. Pooper

I am on for the drive up 36. We drove Platina to Red Bluff this past weekend. It was the Reddding area REME group. Sandie was there from Yreka. There is a short part of 36 that has some construction going on. It was about a 5 minute delay. How far up 36 is the run? All the way to Fortuna? Where to then? Just wanted to get an idea of where I might end up Friday night.

I'm up for all the way to 101 then turn south, but I'm flexable. Depends on how many there are and which direction everyone wants to go. You coming down from Shasta?
I was in Redding last friday at about 5am, then on down to Chico and home at 2pm. This all started at 8am the day before..... from home. That's why I know it's 46.5mi from Willows to the Hwy 36 turn off in Red Bluff. Spent the rest of the weekend trying to recover.

Willum,

Damn, I wish I knew you were in town. We had a run on Saturday and you could have joined us. We went from Old Shasta out to Platina and then down 36 to Red Bluff. Next time your in the Redding/Shasta area give me a buzz. I am up there about 50% of the time. I'll be coming down from Shasta for Thunderhill HOM, probably will come down Wednesday night. Then I'll drive back to Shasta and be ready for Friday AM. Gotta be back down in Sonoma for the REME run on Nov 4. Too many twistys.....not enough time!

Sounds like it was a fun run.....
I was in my Chevy Astro van with AT&T logo's all over it, so #1, I'm sure the company wouldn't have liked me "tearing up the twisties" with it and #2, it ain't made to "tear up the twisties"..... #3, after almost 36hrs and 600mi later, this 'ol body was plain outa gas.
Next time....
There is a 2 day autoX in Atwater on 11/3-4 that I'm going to try and make otherwise I'd come up for the Sunday 11/4 run......

Trip Sounds like Fun

Been at least ten years since I've driven Highway 36, and I've got nothing better to do on Friday, so unless otherwise notified, count me in. Looks as if we could be in Fortuna for a late lunch, and/but then it's a six hour drive home for me, so I might be up for a stop-over in the north bay Friday night.

If you are heading on SR-36 on Friday, spending the nigt on US-101 south of Fortuna Friday night, if you want to spend the day wine tasting in Mendocino & Sonoma County on Saturday, you can join REME on our Run through Sonoma, Napa, Lake & Mendocino County (around 175 miles) on Sunday....

Just a thought for those that have the desire to drive... then drive some more.

Let's see who is going and where are we going to start?

I see Willum, Pooper, Gary Anderson, darmog?, unixgal.... any more???

Looks like a few starting from Willows.

I'll meet the group at the highway 36 exit off I-5. What time? 8:30AM sound good? I'll be coming down from Old Shasta. I'll probably drive as far as Fortuna and then head back to Old Shasta, grab my stuff, and drive back to Windsor so I can make the REME Sunday Run.

I'm soo looking forward to this (in addition to the track day). Should be a total blast. I'm booked at the Best Western in Red Bluff for Thursday night.

How about meeting at 8:30 leaving by 9:00:

Supermart Exxon
205 Antelope Blvd
Red Bluff, CA 96080
(530) 527-7155

I'm still debating doing some more awesome roads up there and coming back to the Bay Area on Saturday afternoon... Hmmm.

If we wanted to make Friday a long and fun day, we could then go up 101 --> 299 --> 96 and then spend the night in Yreka. The options are almost endless.

This sounds great. I know Willum is staying in Willows on Thursday night, and I am not sure where the others will stay. Now e have a starting point and time.

There are a bunch of great roads up here. One option is to come back from Fortuna to Platina and take the Platina-Igo/Ono road, then to Placer and across Swasey to highway 299. Then out past Whiskeytown to Weaverville and up highway three through Trinity Center and over Scott Mountain. Just a thought!

I had thought about staying Red Bluff on Thursday night but didn't want to haul all my stuff out to the race track....so Willows it is. I should be at Casa Ramos by 6ish....depends on how my day goes + I want to get through Sacramento prior to the rush hour.

Sandie....you out there? You going to join us on Friday?

8:30 meet up sounds good to me......don't forget the radio's

This is going to be a blast!!!! I'm up for anything after 36 to the coast. There are so many great options around there to have twisty fun. I've also got the ok from my pet sitter that she'll be able to cover me through Sunday, so I'm open to a whole weekend of motoring bliss and willing to play it by ear.

So, should we have a roll call of who is still in for part/all of this?

Bummer you can't make it darmog!

I'm free until Saturday afternoon, prior engagement.....and me thinks a "roll call" over drinks tonight would be in order.....

I think you have the right idea Willum. I've changed my reservation to two nights in Willows and cancelled Red Bluff. Why check out and lug stuff to the track and rush off after a track day.

What a kick in the "***"!!! Great run! Those that did not join in, missed one "hella" ride. Weather was great, sunny cool and the roads were smooth. Thanks to Willum, Unixgal, and Starlord for such a fun day. Hope you all made it home safe.

It sure was fun chasing down those sport bikes...letting them know that Minis "rule" highway 36 They were great to ride with!

If anyone wants to drive 36 again let me know, I'm ready anytime.

Thanks Emily for setting this up.

Cheers,

Norm

Hey Guys!

It was a total blast hitting the twisties with you.

I couldn't have asked for a better time! Great roads at a fun pace, beautiful scenery, and top notch people. The deer had the good sense to either cross safely or look both ways before crossing, and the pair of cows politely kept to their side of the road.

Our four MINI contingent was too fun to be a part of.

No "chasing" of the sportbikes required... they were just running shotgun for us. MINI's, Motorcycles and twisty roads... three of my favorite things.

I'm so glad that I finally got to meet up with other MINI folks for a "run". You guys ROCK!!!!

2 day's of pure bliss..... Thursday's track day....then Friday's twisties were just what the doctor ordered and 465mi later, made it home all in 1 piece. Spent most of Saturday removing all the bug guts and rubber marks off the paint.....now all is good.
Norm, thanks for sharing your home with us and the much needed "bio break"
Can't wait for the next road trip.........
