Navigation & Audio 2 H/K questions: head unit and total watts
I know that (at least) the wattage question has been dealt with on here before but it seems like noone knows for certain what the total wattage of the H/K system is...? I even called my dealer--they didn't know. One MA said that "he knew a guy" and would get back to me but never did. I mean, I'm not lookin' for the holy grail, here! Shouldn't this be a simple question to answer?
Also, who makes the head unit? Is it Alpine (according to dealer) or Blaupunkt (according to friend)?
Why is this system so mysterious?
Thanks guys, I 'preciate the help

I too have queried (sp) about the HK system at the dealer and got the same run around. I even asked if a shop manual existed for it. same answer. This system is probably the "Best" factory unit that I have heard but ...still would like to know the mechanics, (type of connectors, speakers etc.), of it for possible up-grades ie. Isobaric sub
I found a review of the HK system floating on the web somewhere (I'd post the link but I don't remember it and don't know how to do that, anyway) that rated the system very well but the reviewer was also unable to find definitive specs for the system and was similarly confused over the lack of manuals supplied to MINI by H/K.
Weird.

Total wattage is one of those things that depends on a number of things, like speaker impedance (which varies from 4 to sometimes 40 ohms at different frequencies on a typical 4 ohm speaker), the amount of distortion present in a signal (more distortion will yield higher numbers, but is that really what you're looking for).
The HK amplifier puts out 8.5VRMS @ 1 to 2% THD, closer to 9 VRMS @ 10% THD (with the enginer running, providing a DC voltage input of 14.4 VDC to the amp)... into 8 channels of amplifier power. I think that the rear 6x9s are DVC (dual voice coil) "2 ohm" drivers, so each of these gets up to about 70-80 Watts continuous or about 140-160 watts peak. The front door woofers are also probably 2 ohm drivers, but only SVC, each receiving up to 35-40 Watts (70-80 peak). The mid/tweeter combo are probably 4 ohm drivers, but the amp could drive a 2 ohm load... So this amp cahnnel is probably delivering up to 15-20 watts (30-40 peak), but may be delivering as uch as 30-40 (70-80 peak). Realistically, most music will have much less content above 1kHz, than below, so those mid/tweets rarely ever see more than a few watts... (If you listen to a lot of trumpet solo, acapella gospel choir, sine waves you may be able to push some power to the mid/tweets, but you probably don't)
Marketing lit would probably call this system a 160 Watt Continuous/320 Watt Peak system. (40 watts x 8 channels).
