I am bound to get a ticket in my MCS

With 3,500km and a month and a half of owning my car I already got pulled over, going 23km over speed limit. Thankfully I didn’t get a ticket – I had a rather believable excuse, not to mention the cop was more interested in the car than writing a ticket. But it boils down to this – I don’t get a sense of speed in my cooper .
An example: I’m diving on the highway, cars in front of me, and I feel as if I’m moving at a turtle’s speed, not more than 80km/h (about 50 miles/h). I peek at a Speedo and it shows 120km/h (74 miles/h) !!! Only at 140km/h I feel like I’m cruising, not speeding, simply cruising. But this “velocity lack” happens in all speeds. I’m going 60, I feel like I’m going 40 or less. I’m going 30 and I could probably run faster. 20? Jeez, I’m standing!
I drove a 4runner (my other car), a Civic Si (for 7 years) and a Camry (recently, a rental), and I swear, my cooper gives me a false sense of speed. I’m not saying it’s a bad thing, it just wants me to go faster, but I can see a ticket coming my way .
Do you get the same feeling?

adrian

Btw the Speedo is accurate. When I got pulled over it was showing 73, and the cop cloaked me at 23 over 50.

I'm with ya.
I drove a Trooper before my Mini, and I knew when I was speeding cause of the shake of my steering wheel.

The mini is just so smooth, feels as though you are gliding.

Many times I look over at the speedo and I can't believe how fast I'm going.

Definitely going to take some getting use to.

Not only do I "feel you"...I've already been bitten.:impatient I hadn't had a speeding ticket in over 10 years....9 months into MINI-bliss, and I got nailed by a Utah State Trooper.

I won't publically state how far over I was going...let's just say, I totally deserved the ticket....that doesn't make it any easier to swallow.

This is why I love the settable speed alert in my MINI. I keep it set for 74mph and it bleeps at me all the time not realizing just how fast I'm going.

It doesn't help that the MINI is so unique. There is no way to hide!

This weekend I was on the interstate and keep sneaking up to 90 mph. Fortunately, I never did it at the wrong time.

If it wasnt for cruise control and a radar detector I would be so screwed.

Nice. Is this a feature I don't know about, or is it an add-on?

With the exception of a bright red sports car way back, my choice of colors in our cars have been fairly sedate....silvers and blacks mostly. But with the compact dimensions of the Mini vs semi's, I went all out and chose Lightning Blue/white roof/mirrors .....which will also be highly visible to our local highway constabulary.

I remember reading about it in the manual. I know my car has the feature, but I have never bothered to set it. I don't know if this is part of a package or a standard feature and my MINI is an 07.

It may be a feature that is only part of the onboard NAV system. I find it very handy.

Got my first ticket

in 'Rita 2 months after I got her and I have an excellent driving record. I got busted driving to Arizona by an airplane enforced speed trap. I always thought those signs saying speed enforced by aircraft was just a trick to intimadate us into driving the speed limit. Maybe MINI should make "We'll even pay for your first ticket" part of their marketing plan.

I can just see the liability issues as hoards of new Mini owners intentionally try to take advantage of that rebate program....

speed enforced by aircraft
I'm curious as to how this works.
Are there helicopters flying around? Maybe an airplane hi up above out of site? Or perhaps a spaceship piloted by aliens working in conjuction with the local law enforcement.

Mile markers on the shoulder, stopwatches with the pilot, and troopers on the next crest or curve that you don't see.

I guess the airplane cop uses a stopwatch to measure the time it takes for you to drive from point A to point B. http://ask.metafilter.com/47485/Can-...-youre-driving

If that's how they do it then if I went really fast for a short period of time and slowed down below the limit then my time to reach point B would be similar to a car traveling at the speed limit.

Does it flash or other visible signal, hopefully on the OBC? I'm deaf, so a beep wouldn't be much help to me.

I had the same sense of not-speeding when I test drove a MINI. Looks like my perfect record (well, ok, *1* warning) over the last 15 years will be in danger of being sullied with an actual ticket.

Gives an audible "bwoooop" sound, briefly shows "SPEED" in a slashed circle on the top tac display, shows a triangle with an exclamation point on the lower tach display, and along the bottom of the NAV screen it says something like "Speed Limit Exceeded".

Not mentioned in manual??

Hi,
I just checked the manual I downloaded from Owner's Lounge for my enrouted 2007 MCS and the only thing it said about the set speed limit is that an icon will come up if the set speed limit is exceeded. So it appears A) they forgot to put in how to change speed limit, B) can't put in the instructions due to stupid legalistic requirement, or C), they just set in stone the value, most likely the highest legal speed limit in USA.

I'll double-check once I get my car in a few weeks.

I think it is probably a NAV only feature. I'm trying to remember how I set it... it wasn't through the normal "Setup" menu, but rather a sub menu under navigation.

I specifically set mine to 74 since they typically ticket at >10mph over, and the limit is 65 where I tend to "coast" faster than I think.
