WHEEL SHAKE?

I put new wheels on about three months ago and everything was fine for a bit. Now the steering wheel shakes between 40 and 70 mph. I have taken it to a tire shop and had the wheels rebalanced but still no help. I bought the hubcentric rings but am not sure if I should replace them too. Does anyone have any advice?

Are you saying that there are centering rings in place? Are they plastic, or aluminum?

I had this problem with CenterLine RPMs. CenterLine claimed they were "lug-centric" but two tire places that balanced them both said, "Get centering rings." So I did -- problem solved. Mine are aluminum.

All I know is that I ordered hubcentric rings which go into the round opening of the wheel so there is "no shake" I have not heard of centering rings. Where did you get yours?

I think hubcentric and centering are the same thing. I got them from Discount Tires online. I think they were $15. They were red anodized aluminum. You could take a wheel off and look to see if they actually installed them on yours.

Just had this problem too. Check your rings for worn spots.
Take the wheels off and reinstall. When you reinstall be sure to step through the torque squence. I started at 40, then 60, then 89. If that doesnt correct then check for flat spots as kenchan mentioned or get a ballance done on a road force machine...

Did the people who balance the wheels make sure they weren't slightly bent? Bent wheels can still be balanced, but will also still show some wobble.

Could be the tires too

Could be the tires - as mentioned a flat spot - or tread seperation .. this can be seen when balancing IF you are looking for it.....the tire will be out of round. It isn't all that unusual and the tire will generally be replaced. It can be a natural failure aka flaw, or caused by a pot hole....if there is a bent wheel to go with it, forget the free tire

Yeah if the balancing place couldnt find the problem and they arent totally incompitent it could be one of these. Although I would still think that they should find the problem anyways. If the steering wheel is shaking you know its one of the front two, but just to check rotate the tires. Also you could try bumping the pressure up to the max, that would be more obivous if there are any tread seperations or bubbles in the tire. Other tire defects might be hard to tell, but moving them to the back will help you confirm its just the wheel/tire.
