Lost Key, Now what?

I finally did it. I lost one of the keys . Now what do I do? :impatient. When I was given the wrong valet key they had to send away accross the pond for it.

You pretty much have two options, and which one to pick kinda depends on *how* you lost the key.

Is the key gone forever, with little or no chance of recovery, or it ever meeting up with your MINI again (ie, you lost it in California on vacation, and you live in Florida)? If so, you can just order a new one from the dealership. It's going to cost about $100-$150, and it'll take a while, as it's going to come from across the pond (unless things changed fairly recently).

If you think that the key could be picked up by someone in the area where you live, work, shop, or play, for safety of the vehicle, I would get the locks changed and recoded. If I remember correctly, someone else had to do that and it cost about $750 or so. Otherwise, your MINI could be stolen with the key. And if insurance got wind of that, you'd be SOL.

(I actually started looking into this last week when I thought I lost my spare key. Luckily, when I was describing my dillema to my significant other, she found it laying literally next to my feet! )

They sell them on ebaymotors for anywhere between $19 to $29. I think the dealer can program it for you.

I have an '06. My condo was broken into and the people stole my spare set of keys. I still had a set though. I could NOT get it reprogrammed. I only had ONE option and that was it....rekey the entire car. Grand total out the door $1000. Well, $997 to be more accurate. Pretty stupid if you ask me that ONLY option is to rekey.

Now I don't know what happens if you have an older model. My SA told me that the '06 was the only one where you had to rekey everything. DOn't know what to tell you. Hope you don't have to pay a grand like I did. :impatient
