Potential big problem here, need help!!!

I have noticed a whining sound when the air conditioning is on. But ONLY when the air conditioning is on. This whining is only when I accelerate, and if I accelerate and turn off the A/C it immediatley stops.

I am also noticing that there is a very LOUD fan that continues to run even after I turn off the car. So loud that I can hear it from inside a building. This will happen even after I drive short distances.

What's happening here??????

the whining under accel that changes pitch relative to rpm is the compressor. mine does the same thing. what i am wondering is if it is normal to be that loud. so, no real answer, because i have also been wondering the same thing.

has anyone had a compressor replaced and noticed a lower noise level?

my compressor makes the same sound. nothing to really worry about. but if it's under warranty, make them fix it.

Mine makes a racket when it is VERY hot like it is in Alabama this time of year. I've learned to ignore it.

The only problem I have with this is that it never used to make this sound. And it appears to be getting worse.

I'm guessing from your "join" date that you're still under warranty, take 'er in and have the whining checked. The fan over-run is intentional to cool the engine, if you think the Mini's loud you should've owned a 1st generation watercooled VW - those suckers sounded almost like a Cessna at rotation until they cooled...

Unfortunatley it's an 02'

I don't remember the fan coming on and being so loud in the past, and aslo I don't remember the whining noise being so loud either.

^^ good call there, possibly check an independent mechanic, but only if you've got one you're really comfortable with... or who has references...

he means adding oil to the a/c system. there may be oil injecting tools/kits at an auto parts store that allow you to do this without evacuating the system. anyone? at our shop we have a machine to evac and recharge, but we also have an oil injection tool to add oil while the system is pressurized. so i just use the machine at the shop, which is your other option, just take it to a reputable automotive shop and have them do it.

That's your power steering. Completely normal sound. They all do that.

So this sounds like this is my problem then? The reason I ask is that eveyone wants to charge me to diagnose this issue and I ask here because I'm hoping someone out there has had the same problem and knows beyond doubt what is needed to fix it.

Is it that there is no oil in my AC compressor?

Probably not "no" oil, may just be a low charge of refrigerant or low oil in the system. Hard to diagnose unless someone else has the exact problem...

When I took it to DTM they said that I probably need to replace the AC Compressor. They didn't mention a thing about oil injection or refrigerant. But then they only just listened to it. They didn't really diagnose it at all.

This is exactly what I am afraid of. If all it needs is oil, or refrigerant, I don't want to pay over $1,000.00 to replace an AC compressor.

Is your a/c blowing cold? A recharge at a local a/c shop may take care of the problem, or at least put off compressor replacement for a while, and wouldn't cost $1000...

Also (a thought), if you put the a/c on it usually triggers the engine cooling fan - is that what you're hearing, or is the nose coming from the compressor or a/c plumbing? Run the car with the a/c on and off and listen in the engine compartment... carefully so hair and clothing don't get caught in the moving parts...

I have this issue on my 06. Was told its normal...even the excessive loudness that I can hear in the house. It's so loud that in a drive through they cant hear what I am saying. (shrug)

According to Mini...its normal, get used to it.

I have this and I'm trying to find a cheap/inexpensive solution.

Here is my situation:

With a/c on (that I've noticed) I get an occasional whining/whirring noise, it just comes and goes w/ no reason. Also, if I am on an on/off ramp, or coming around a curve with the steering wheel turned 15 deg or more the whine will get louder, That is, if the a/c is already making noise. Oh, it is blowing cold air.

The noise is louder than what I am use to and not coming from the bonnet. This is not the power steering. I already know what that sounds like, I've got 91k miles and driven every single one of them.

Will this oil and recharge work? Has anyone had this done already?

I have the same issue. I did not think anything of it really but since I am taking my car to the dealer next Friday to get the rear hatch mechanism replaced underwarranty I guess I will have them look at the AC as well. My warranty is up in september (probably less than a month)

If you bring something to the dealer attention and then it goes out pretty quickly after if they don't fix it would they honor the claim?

That noise is not normal. If it is only with A/C on and during accelleration, it is a slipping belt. Either the tensioner is not working right or the belt is bad. If the tensioner is bad, the belt will also have to be replaced.

A/C oil is held in suspension with the freon. If you are low on freon, it means a leak in the lines or a bad A/C compressor seal. Unlikely to cause the noise described.

Is the noise a squealing sound or a whining sound.

Mine is a whining sound that increases in pitch with acceleration, think it's a belt? And is this expensive?

no, it's not a belt. mine does the same thing. it's the compressor. a belt noise is more of a screeching type noise. this is a whining sound that goes up and down relative to engine rpm. at 3500rpm and up i can hear it clear as a bell.

Have you gotten a quote on repair for this?
