2008 MINI Magical Mystery Tour
2008 MINI Magical Mystery Tour
We are in the planning stages to have an early fall event in San Francisco next September over a long weekend (Friday through Sunday). We are planning on this being a local REME event but it may mushroom into a National Event if interest arises. If so, then we will need cooperation from the three other Bay Area Mini-MINI clubs, Chamber of Commerce, vendors, and others.
Ideas for activities include:
Ideas for activities include:
- A Midnight run through San Francisco including a drive down Lombard Street, the Broadway Tunnel, The Presidio, Coit Tower, Twin Peaks, the Golden Gate Bridge, Treasure Island, Ocean Beach, Fisherman's Wharf, Scenic 49 mile drive, and possibly an early breakfast at Mel's Diner.
- Non-Driving activities could include a visit to Angel Island, Alcatraz, Ferry Dinner Bay Cruise, cable cars, Fishermens' Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, watching Sea Lions, BBQ dinner and car show on Treasure Island, Russian Hill, picnic in Golden Gate Park, visit the Cliff House, midnight beach bonfire, etc.
- Giants Baseball Game at the AT&T ballpark or visit to the De Young Museum, the Exploratorium, The Metreon Theater at Moscone Center, Palace of Fine Arts, etc.
- Walking tours could include Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Russian Hill, China Town, Japan Center, Fisherman's Wharf, Muir Woods, and Jerry can guide us through the Haight-Ashbury district.
- We could have a couple of drives including Marin Headlands, Stinson Beach, or Bolinas (where Hippie is still spoken).

Update:
Rumors have it that Major League Baseball will be releasing the 2008 schedule next week. Once this schedule is released, we will select a September weekend for the Magical Mystery MINI Tour 2008. Although not eveyone will want to go to a Giants game, we do expect many MINI participants from "out-of-the-area", I think that we should have a visit to AT&T park for a ball game available during the event. AT&T Park is one of the finest ball parks in all of baseball.
In the meantime MINI USA is still looking at what they plan to do for MTTS 2008. We have suggested (strongly) that they combine the MTTS 2008 to include our BIG BASH as a finale' in San Francisco.
Since this event will take alot of planning and logistics, the sooner we set a date the better.
Just wanted to let eveyone know that there is movement "behind-the-scenes".
Some things we are considering as changes would be:
A BBQ dinner followed by a concert on Treasure Island Saturday night. This will provide quite a spectacular back-drop with the San Francisco nightime skyline in the background. Should make for some awesome photos.
We are considering having an early morning "sunrise" run in leu of the midnight run. This will allow many to "recouperate" from Saturday nights "party" before engaging in a drive through the streets of SF. This would also be a good time for a beach bonfire and breakfast before the run.
We are looking into using one of the SF piers or a location at Fort Mason for the event headquarters. We hope to get a spot where we can all park our MINIs. We hope to have 24 hour security with "in & out" privleges. San Francisco has plenty of public transportation so it would be easy to park the MINI and get around SF via cable car, bus, Golden Gate Ferry, taxi, bicycle, tugboat, rickshaw, BART, etc. This would also provide a place for vendor booths. Chinatown, Ghiradelli Square, Fisherman's Warf, Coit Tower, Broadway, AT&T Park, Pier 39, the Ferry Building & Terminal are all within walking distance.
We have MINI runs planned to the Marin Headlands, Mount Tamalpias, and the Marin Coast, along with a run through the Santa Cruz Mountains. The Sonoma & Napa county wine country is also very close for those that wish to pay a vist to the wineries.
We have looked into this and there are MINIs available for rent. As these plans develop further we will post the list.
Again this is just in the planning stages but we are making progress. Hope to see you all in San Francisco in September (make sure to wear some flowers in your hair). This is the best time of year in SF, warm, clear, sunny, with beautiful clear starry nights.
Cheers,

We have not heard anything back from MINI USA on their plans for MTTS 2008. We are proceeding with the Magical Mystery Tour 2008 in San Francisco as scheduled for September 5-7, 2008.
If we hear from MINI USA, or anyone else, we will keep you posted here (NAM) and on the Redwood Empire Mini Enthusiasts website.

We are now getting signups in increasing numbers. If you are interested in attending what may end up being one of the biggest MINI/Mini events in the country, PLEASE go to the event website: www.magicalmysteryminitour.com then click on Event Mailing List at the top and sign up. We need to get accurate numbers. There is a tremendous amount of planning involved with an event this size and we need to know the numbers.
We are also asking for major corporate sponsorship. These people want to know how many to expect before they pull out their checkbook. The more people we can show the more likely we will get the funds we want to make this a event to remember.
Even at this early date, we have well over 100 Minis signed up and over 200 people planning to attend. If you have not please sign up now.
Thanks,

To all Magical Mystery Mini Tour participants:
We now have participants coming from several countries, including Italy, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, and more. We have gotten requests from our friends abroad to see if there might be fellow Mini owners that would be willing to take along a passenger. Since it would be difficult and costly to bring their MINIs to San Francisco, we have set up some “sign-up” sheets on the Magical Mystery Mini Tour website ( www.magicalmysteryminitour.com) for share rides (check the headings).
If you are planning on attending and won’t have a Mini and would like to “hitch a ride” along with one of the local Mini owners, please fill out that form. Same goes for any of the local Mini owners, if you have space in your Mini for an “out-of-town” Mini Guest, please sign up and let us know so we can match you up. These will be just for the runs. This is not an obligation to be taxi service for the entire weekend.
I think this is a great way for us to show our MINI community solidarity. I plan to take along a Mini guest for as many runs as I can.
I hope that they can learn as much about San Francisco as I will learn about their country.
Just a note of interest on the “Steve McQueen Memorial Run”. This run is being held in memory of Steve McQueen, star of the movie “Bullitt”, a 1968 Oscar wining action packed movie. This movie featured some great chase scenes through the streets of San Francisco. Steve McQueen also starred in other great motorsports movies such as “Le Mans” and “The Great Escape”. Our run will begin after a sunrise bonfire and breakfast on Ocean Beach (Pacific Ocean) on the Great Highway. Our starting point will be on the beach; just below the historic “Cliff House” perched on the cliffs above. We will head along the coastline and cut across to Twin Peaks for a panoramic view of San Francisco from high atop the hills. There we will….. (stay tuned much to follow J)
Added note: PDX Minis out of Oregon will be planning a caravan to San Francisco. They plan to come south on interstate I-5 and take a very popular deviation on highway 36 at Red Bluff. There they will head up to Fortuna and catch US 101 south through the “Avenue of the Giants” Redwoods. They have extended an invitation to all that would like to join in.
By the way we do plan to have the movies “Bullitt” and the “Italian Job” (original & new) playing in the evenings on a big screen on Treasure Island.

The Phil Wicks Driving Academy is planning to run a track event in conjunction with the Magical Mystery Tour 2008 in San Francisco. The event will be a "auto-cross" type event, Minis only, held at Infineon Raceway on Monday, September 8, 2008. If we can get 30+ Minis to participate the cost will be about $150 for the day.
Just wanted to run this "up the flagpole" to make sure there is enough interested drivers. Please let me know norm@redwoodempiremini.com or Phil Wicks racerwicks@aol.com . You can visit www.minidriving.com or post your comments here.

Here is good news for those of you that have been dragging your feet!
Because of recent announcements from both Mini Mania and Moss Motors promoting the Magical Mystery Mini Tour, and extensions for the "final number of participants" given to us from our vendors; we have extended the cut-off date for registration of $100 per car until August 20th. Therefore you can continue registering using our dedicated web site until then.
After August 20th, advance registrations will no longer be accepted online but registration will be allowed at the door on the days of the event as space allows. The cost of "at the door" registration will be posted shortly. Only cash payments will be accepted on the day of the event.
Unfortunately the tee shirt order has to be placed today (August 1st) so there will be no more pre-ordering of the event tee shirts. I will have some additional tee shirts available on Treasure Island but they will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Supplies will intentionally be limited since I want them all sold before the event is over. The tee shirt option has been removed from the downloadable registration and PayPal forms.
I look forward to seeing you all having fun on this exciting weekend!

There will be a lot of Mini-MINI clubs represented at MMMT on Treasure Island! Thanks to everyone that has signed up. You'll help make this a great success! Just so you know, registration has been extended to August 20th at the same $100 per car price. There will be no additional online registrations accepted after August 20, although day of event registration may be allowed if space permits.
I want everyone to know that club members will be able to park together throughout the weekend. We will assign locations for clubs represented with "at-large attendees mixed between the clubs. Clubs will also be able to set up club tent type booths and post banners to promote their clubs at no cost if they desire, if manned by paid registrants. Club booths will be able to be set up either in the parking lot or near the vendor's village on the grass depending on space restraints. We will determine that on Thursday when we are doing our final "set-up" touches.
Please post any questions here or email me or Norm and we will get back to you ASAP.

MMMT is almost here! We have had a lot of requests from members and others that are interested in only attending for one day. We have come up with a single day policy for *new* registrants. Obviously, if you want to attend Saturday only, that is the day that has the bulk of our activities & costs. So Saturday only pre-registration is now available until August 20th. Payment options will be included on the PayPal site by 10pm tonight.
Saturday Only Registration will include access for one car and one banquet ticket. All events on Saturday are included as well as access to the concert. Cost $80.00. Each additional dinner ticket is $30.00. - This is available as a pre-event registration only and payment must be received by August 20th.
Day of Event Registration (price is per person, not per car) includes all events and concert:
* Friday: $20 per person / children 10 & under free
* Saturday: $50 per person / children under 10: $20 - bring your own food or buy from vendors. No access to the banquet
* Sunday: $20 per person / children 10 & under free (no meals included)

MINI of San Francisco has been gracious and just sent an email to about 50,000 people on their mailing list announcing the Magical Mystery Mini Tour. In fairness to those hearing about this event for the first time, we are extending registration from August 20 to August 31.
