Do the R5x designations seem a little arbitrary?
Do the R5x designations seem a little arbitrary?
For the first-Gen MINI, the MC and MCS had different designations (R50 and R53). That is, unless you had a convertible, in which case both the Cooper and the 'S' are designated R52.
But with the second-gen cars, both the Cooper and the 'S' have the same designation (R56).
Just seems a little inconsistent to me, unless MINI has just decided to permanently drop the designation differences between the Cooper and the 'S' on all the future body styles.

My understanding is that the R50 Cooper was conceived first and they didn't really consider adding the R53 MCS until later. So the cars had different designations. Since the R52 and R56 were conceived from the beginning as having both MC and MCS versions, they don't have different R5x...
