Well, after a couple of exchanged emails and a quick response, I have a new carbon fiber hood scoop en route! I emailed yesterday mid-day about an auction I saw (right here), got an almost instant response which answered my question, and today at 9AM I have a tracking #. I will post pics when I get it and put it on!!!

(P.S. here's a link to a post in which I post the email correspondence. Mod, if link to another board is not allowed, please edit out.)

P.P.S. (edit) Here is a picture...

Sharp piece of kit. Do us a favor when it comes in, weigh the carbon fibre scoop and the painted scoop that you are removing. Curious minds want to know how much weight is saved by carbon fibre.

Thanks L.Mini! I wanted my first real post to be with my first real mod to the car.

CooperSpeed, I've owned a few other cars that I've done mods to, and I can say by far that Carbon Fiber is probably one of the more expensive types of mods. My brother has a BMW 330Ci which he put a Dinan carbon fiber intake on for $500.00, and an interior kit for $1100. I was also a bit concerned about the price, but the email I got back, and the return policy stated in the Ebay ad, sold me on it. If I don't like it, belive me, I'll return it.

MGC, I'll weigh it for sure! I just took the stock one out of the car for fun and it registered 1.5 lbs on my scale (I think the bastard rounds up). I'm hoping it's really 1 lb and I weigh 66% of what I thought I did. BTW, I didn't get it to save weight, but I suppose every little bit helps!

If you're going for looks, go for it, but if you're really trying to save weight (which I doubt you are, but you know someone is), it reminds me of what was called Gramitis in the cycling world...
It was the inane process of trying to shave grams off of your bike in any way/shape/form (even down to replacing all of the bolts/nuts/screws with aluminum) which had the total effect of decreasing the weight of your bike (w/rider) oh, 1% if you were lucky.. needless to say, that does nothing except waste money and time...

Carbon fiber is strong and light so think strength and weight savings- does it really make a difference for where you are adding it? On the dash- nope all looks unless the pieces it replaces are very heavy. On the bonnet it is for looks unless the form of it is different than stock- an advantage if it catches more air. It is lighter but not by much- more weight is saved by buying upgraded light rims and tires. So the CF scoop is mostly for looks and with the black cooper it should be great looking- congrats.

I didn't get the scoop to save weight (I could probably lose a lb. cheaper than $299), I got it because I think it will look wicked on my car. I know there are purists out there who say "all show and no go," etc. But if I wanted a blazingly fast car I would have put 25K into a 14K honda, and the other 11K into making it a 10 second car! (The MCS is no slouch anyway) I bought a mini because it's a distinctive car, and things like this CF scoop, CF mirror covers, and other little accents just make it that much more distinctive - while keeping it tasteful.

Will post pics as soon as I get it on!!!
