As I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet I thought it was about time everyone was aware of this. In discussions with Randy first and them Vince Bly, MCS owner and a member of the STAC, (Street Touring Advisory Committe) it looks like at least some of the intakes on the market are not STX legal. The ALTA intake was the first intake that made me question the intake issue. What you can do is replace the entire intake box, filter and any of the tubing going into or out of the the filter up to the throttlebody. You can't create new air intake holes or enlarge existing holes, in parts of the car, in order to do this that are not a part of the OE intake syatem. I hope this is clear but as some examples of what is and isn't legal I will list the following and why. Madness intake, legal. It relpaces the upper half of the air box and then the new heat shield extends back to the existing wall between the OE intake and the windshield, creating a bigger air box but not modifing anything other than the OE intake system. Randy's Air Box Mod to this type of system is NOT legal as it modifies this back wall by adding holes to something that is not part of the OE intake system in order to get more air into the intake. By this, you can clearly see that the ALTA intake, which removes the entire back wall is NOT legal.

I hope this helps, and doesn't caused to much grief for those who already have intakes.

Edit, 5/31/06 Apparently it is not necessary to modify the back wall to install the Alta intake, though I believe Alta recommends this, to get more air. So, the Alta is legal if the back wall is unmodified and illegal if modified. If you have a JCW 210, you already have the extra air and are legal with the Alta unless you make additional back wall mods.

Why wouldn't the Alta be legal... you can remove the airbox... Clearly the back wall is part of the original airbox.. why couldn't it be removed? You are not drilling holes in anything (i.e. creating new air intake holes or enlarging existing holes.... ) I could see that drilling homes is a NON AIRBOX structure to get more air to the filter wouldn't be legal...

Discuss...

What if you enlarge the existing hole in the back wall (shown on the left side in this pic)?

Hmm. Well there is an existing hole in the partition that is plumbed into the airbox. Im not sure if that qualifies it part of the air intake system (it obviously serves other purposes).

Andy, I asked Vince about enlarging that hole as well. You could enlarge the hole in the air box, as you can replace the whole box but the back wall which is connected to the OE air box by a rubber tube is not considered part of the intake system, so it can not be modified.

pamato, the wall the ALTA removes is not considered part of the intake system as you can take the air box out and that back wall is still there. It only becomes part of the air box when you mod the OE box like the Madness and Pipercross intakes.

Given that SCCA autocross is amateur, it shouldn't really be necessary for a protest to occur for people to police themselves, and just do the best they can to follow the written rules.

A similar situation evolved around the MR2 Spyder, and illegal un-safe-for-a-rollover-but-not-without-body-stiffening-benefits "style bar" (improperly engineered roll bar). I can't say I have much sympathy for those that don't want to take the time to understand the rules they are supposed to follow.

Not to jump on you Andy, but protests aren't really what the rules are about. I just wanted to point that out. Hopefully we can avoid the whole "weenie protest" debate here.

I have been around the SCCA a long time and I agree that people should do the best they can to follow the rules but trust me on this one, Autocrosser take there sport very very seriously. Protests are very real on all levels of this type of motorsport. It does indeed put a damper on things some days but hey, just do what I do run in non- comp. class. no fuss, do what every you would like to your car ,just big grins all day long.

I kinda like it when Andy gets picked on. It's more entertaining that way.
