Need to know what part this is

I have an 06 gearbox 6 speed that I aquired, part # 2300 7531770 this is the new number for a factory box, not the remanufacture number. Does any one know how I can find out if this has the LSD without cracking the box?
My local parts department does not seem to have a way to cross reference, they needed the vin number of the car it came from which I do not have.

Hmmm....Try this.
Select any forward gear and rotate one of the output drives. If it's an "open" diff (not LSD), the other side should rotate in the opposite direction. If they rotate in the same direction, I'd say you have LS.

Not true at least on my 05 and others. I talked this over with Randy Webb a couple of times. MANY of the MINIs with the factory LSD have opposite rotation of the wheels. This id dependent on type of dif as well as open vs LSD.

I have determined that it is an open diff, will have to move the quaife from my 03 to this one.

This tranny is not yet installed so looked through the drive shaft opening and saw that there is a shaft connecting the spider gears which is how the open diff is constructed.

Oh well... It was a thought. That's how the LSD's behaved on my old Datsuns.

Jim,
I too thought as you did due to having a quaiffe in a prior VW. The first time I checked my MINI out you can guess I was pretty pissed as I paid for the darn thing! Anyway a call to the MINI service dept and a talk to a tech, as well as the talks with Randy, confirmed that the LSD design in the MINI does allow opposite rotation in forward gears. Kinda strange, but I guess that's they way they designed the thing.

I know that the LSD design in the MINI is only a "25%"-locking differential, so perhaps it's the difference between that and the more performance-oriented versions on the market that explains the difference in behaviour when the wheels are off the ground.
