MITM ~ Blue Mountain Goat Club

is now seeking members. If you plan to join us and go up Mt. Evans at Midnight either on Friday or Saturday, please POST here. Just let us know which day, if not both.

Both rides will leave from CMR Copper Mountain Resort just after the dinner's end on Friday and Saturday night. That means....departure at 10 pm sharp.

Bring change. There is a fee to use the park (not to drive the road). You will have to put it in a little machine and get a ticket, which you keep on the dash for when the ranger checks you out. (Yes, there is a ranger at the top, and especially that weekend since the Perseids (Meteor Shower) will be highlighting. There will be other pp there too. We are not the only crazies.

So go ahead and POST. Are you a member of the BMGC? FNC version or SNC version? Just let us know.

BTW: On the map, you see Hwy103 leads to the mouth of Mt. Evans. That is the "Western Dragon". You will want to do that too. Twisty, Turny, Groovy. At altitude. Watch for the cool graphics, also available embroidered on your own personalized 'tshirt'.

www.MountEvans.com 14,264 ft up, paved road, at Midnight. Nekkid.

I'm in for BMGC FNC!
Last year on the way to Copper we took 103 and stopped at the ranger station and bought a ticket. It's good for 2 or 3 days if I remember right. Pre-purchase would be better than the night of IMO.

Really good suggestion

Chuck is right. Take 103 (The Western Dragon) from Evergreen, CO to Mt. Evans. Go to the Ranger Station on Thursday and get a tickey (it is right there). It is good for 3 days - all you need.

Then on Friday and Saturday nights, just drive right in, no stopping at Go, no paying $$.

I'm down for both nights as long as I enjoy myself the first night. Jon, how much parking is up there?

Interesting you ask.

Yet another reason why...it is advisable to have a ticket before, and just scoot on up without having to buy one....

Parking is limited. There are probably 50 marked spaces, but there is lots of circular drive going on. It is not hard to pull off the side of the drive because, well, there is no grass or mud up there. Keep in mind that at that altitude, nothing grows - so there is no flora - and hardly any fauna.

The fauna that is there is covered with FUR. Take a hint.

I told you, this is a one-of-a-kind experience. Try it Nekkid.

Since the sunup at the summit drive is Sunday at 5 AM and that sounds fun (will there be a coffee stop?) I'd like to do the FNC.

Let me count the reasons:

  • Nobody has to wear a coat and tie at MITM
  • Weddings have a short reception. Our whole weekend is a receptions.
  • Weddings have gas guzzling Cadillacs. We have sensitive-on-the-environment MINI Coopers
  • Ah, the bridesmaids won't fit in a MINI, anyway. Wait.......
  • You really shouldn't get high at a wedding. At MITM, we get high nightly.
Want more?

I will be in for the FNC and SNC as well. As long as Randy has my mods done on time for the late drive.

$10 bucks to the top ($100 bucks to get back down). Just kidding, $10 will get you up and back for 3 days.

First MITM

Hiya!

Just a general question about Midnight on Mt Evans. Which night is most popular (i.e., more MINIs go)? This is my first MITM and there appears to be SO much to do; I want to be selective and be sure we (3 other San Diego MINIs and me) get the most out of our trip. Two nights up Mt Evans seems kind of redundant.

Thanks in advance for suggestions, tips, and helpful information. I'm having a "Trip Planning Party" at my house tonight - where we'll all hop on our home network, submit our registrations, sign up for events, plan our route, and decide among the many activities to participate in.

Funny you ask. I am not sure we have a good answer...

Last year, we set this ride up for Saturday night. It was so popular, that we decided to do it BOTH nights this year. So in the past, it was not a matter of choice. But here are some considerations that may sway your choice:
  • If you have to drive 12 hours (or another long distance) on Sunday, you may wish to do Mt. Evans on Friday....
  • If you and your group are planning to take a long day drive to Rocky Mtn National Park on Saturday AM early, you may want to do Mt. Evans on Saturday night
  • If you are planning to park your car in Burning Stones Plaza on Saturday night, and to stay and watch the outdoor movie "Cars" then you won't have time to do Mt. Evans on Saturday night, so you will want to go up on Friday
  • If it is rainy Friday, and you want clear when you get up there (to view the Perseid Meteor Shower) then you may want to go up Saturday
  • Vice-Versa for Saturday
  • If you are a late install for your pulley, plugs, intake, sway bar, and other mods on Friday, you may want to do Mt. Evans on Saturday
  • If you get some really cool shots of the Perseids on Friday, or you see the ones we take on Friday (at the Saturday dinner) then you may want to go up on Saturday
  • and on and on. It is kind of personal but I am guessing that just about everyone in attendance (save a few altitude-challenged folks) will go one night or the other.
Note that if you want to go up, but prefer NOT to drive, we will queue up at the parking structure each night at 10 before we leave. You can hop in, navigate for someone else (there is really only 1 turn once you leave Copper) and make a new friend. That has been done.

Whatever...come "Do it on the Mountain".

Oh, and in case you do NOT order a Blue Mountain Goat shirt to pick up up there on Friday, and in case there are extras, you MAY be able to go up and get one on Saturday.....

Jonathan

Thanks so much. That's helpful information.

The consensus with our party of 4 MINIs seems to be that Friday Night on Mt Evans makes the most sense for us IF it's not raining. We estimate a 15 hour drive home Sunday afternoon/Monday-ish.

So, LilTiger, BlackBeauty, Churchill, and LeapFrog will be ready to roll out to Mt Evans at the staging area on Friday night, notwithstanding rain.

Thanks again!

Jonathan! I'm a very literal person. So when you say nekkid I'm thinking I can make big money with a grape leaf concession at the top. It also makes me think of getting arrested. Nevertheless, as a private road, I'm also thinking Cabrio bonding. Beats the polar bear club!

Nekkid can take many forms

Nekking mentally? Teenagers.
Nekkid spirituallly? Agnostics.
Nekkid physically? Well, I have been known to do that.
Nekkid emotionally? Anyone but teenagers.

Take your literal choice.
