CRAVENSPEED Short Shifter Vs. B&M

I am in the market for a short shifter, and I have a jcw exhaust. I am worried that the short shifter will hit the resonator or something though.

Any problems with the cravenspeed short shifter? Or B&M? I want the height to be lower than the stock height, and want crispier shifts.

Where is the cheapest place I can find it for? Any problems with the short shifters?

I've seen at least a couple of people who have deleted the res. for better sound/less restriction. You could do that and then it'd be no prob.

I have the Alta short shift kit. This thing is amazing! You can chose the exact height that you want and lock it in with three tiny allen head screws. There is no problem with the resonator because there is a plastic box that seals the shifter well from the outside. No resonator problems. The shifter lets you go from stock height all the way to half the stock height!

Hows the quality on the Alta one? Any problems? Has it fallen apart while driving or any minor effects?

Any problems with your 19% pulley kit?

My car had a B&M when I bought it. Never had a problem, but it's short! I will occaisionally miss 3rd (VERY RARELY) and you have to bang the **** quite hard to select reverse. I have known nothing different though... so it has never bothered me!
PS never got in the road of my exhaust...

After 5 years and 106K on my 2002 MCS, I FINALLY got a short shifter!! Put the Alta unit on and for the first week, I still had the MINI stock shift ball. I was not all that impressed.

Then I got a Whalen shift **** and OMG, it absolutely transformed the shifting!! So much smoother and the car just "thinks" itself into the next gear. Whatever short shifter you get, and I think the B&M unit is no longer made, make room in the budget for a Whalen!!

Alta's is so solid it is unbelievable! I have had it on my car for 6 months now and it has been through some hard driving conditions and keeps asking for more. This shifter has a very nice weight to it and is very solid. You do not get the flex like the stick shifter has, when you throw it hard it does exactly what you want it to. I hated the stock shifter because when I threw it hard I was sworried that I would snap it.

I have not had any problems with my 19% pulley at all yet...I have never autocrossed it (coming soon) so it has not made my engine get too hot. If you are just driving aggressive on the street and having occasional shorter time frame races it is perfect. You just have to be smart about how long you are staying on the boost. The 15% I have not used, but am thinking about buying that one for autocrosses.

I bought the Craven speed short shifter and like it A LOT. I believe the only difference between the Craven and the Alta is that you don't have the allen screws to mess with. There is a simple **** that turns to loosen the short shifter allowing you to adjust the height of the shifter with out any tools. Simply turn the **** to the left to un tighten and once you've got the height you want, just turn it back to the right and tighten it. I find it hard to believe that Chris can change much more than about an inch at best without removing the lid of the plastic well box. I needed to remove the lid to be able to adjust the height. With the lid removed, I can move it up or down at least 3 inches from stock height and still not hit my Milltek resonator. I also like the fact that Craven speed gives you the option to use your stock shift ball, Whalen shifter (like I have) or any other brand of shifter ****. At Vegas this year I completed my SS with Craven speeds shift well cover. Here's a shot of the SS and the shift well cover. Here you can see the **** that allows you to change the height. When I still had my shift well boot cover, I was still able to feel the **** and turn it without taking the boot off.

Popping the cover off is not a real big hassle. I do like the craven speed, but I do not like the fact that I can turn it to lower and heighten it, I feel like it will wear out too easily. I do not hit my resonator because I left the stock road debris cover in place.

I have the Cravenspeed and had problems initially with it being very hard to shift...I was told it was adjusted too low. (?) Anyway, I have adjusted it a little higher and it shifts better but there is still something 'funky' about it in the way it feels and its action.
I have had SS's on other cars that were an immediate improvement but the Cravenspeed left me unimpressed.

The lower you go with a height adjustable SS (Alta,Craven Speed), the harder it will be to push into gear. At the height I put mine (two inches deeper than stock), it's not hard to push at all and really clicks into gear with little effort but feels very tight with no guessing about what gear I'm in. I just got back yesterday from a weekend trip to the central California cost line with some friends where we enjoyed some extremely "FUN DRIVING" on miles and miles of twistys and just loved the way my shifter felt while I was rowing my gear box. Very connected and precise. One of the best mods I've done.

Hey folks, just a quick point about the ALTA to clarify. Our kits are available with or without ALTA shift *****. The without versions allow use of the Whalen or stock ***** to your personal preference. The resonator really isn't an issue either. Finally, you can go to stock height with our kit as well. Again just to clarify, not trying to put any undue influence!-)

Thanks again folks!

Let me know if I can ever answer any questions or concerns.

I have to say that I like the idea of Craven's option of adjusting the SS without the use of tools. So basicaly you can adjust it while sitting at a red light, right?

I cannot says it is reccomended, but I often adjust the shifter on Louise without even slowing down, let alone stopping all together.

I had the B&M on my old 2003, and a B&M is inline for my 2005. B&M has a reputation for dog on good tranny parts and shifters
