Navigation & Audio What size sub will fit in the trunk?
I'm using a Crystal CMP10. Which is a 10inch sub. The sub is in a 0.5cu ft box that runs at 50 cycles. It is rated at 700 watts. But i'm only running it at 400 watts RMS. You can use a Cmp 12 in a 0.65 cu ft box enclosure.
Good luck and happy motoring with good sounds.

I've got a RF DVC 12" that I'm sure would fit..... with room to spare.
Not much.... but there would be some room left over. I won't be using it in my MINI but..... I do think it would work.
Personally..... I'm thinking about some good 8" subs.

Well here come audio boys and girl.... and that i do know...
you are working with a small car with small amount of air to be moved...
so there for you can settle for a small sub and keep with the "mini" philosophy RF subs sound like *** and on top of all that they need a lot of air space and the Mini well is MINI and it cant acommodate the airspace that the subs needs... What I would recommend is to go with an Image Dynamic Q or IDQ as we call it since they come in 8, 10, 12 ,15 and well they require a minimal amount of airspace for a sealed box... I would say get one 10 and a 300 watt amp and you will be rocking in the MC or MCS....
Im on my way to get mine... MCS I'll be sure to post some wicked pics of my stereo once everything is set...
if you guys have any question dont be shy just ask away
For an Idea of what kinda stuff im into here is a link

An easy way to get around the lack-of-air-to-push problem is to use multiple smaller subs. For instance, I am looking into installing three 6.5' inchers which (if logic prevails) should sound just as good and powerful as two 10's. The box will be longer, but doesn't have to be as tall or as wide as generic boxes due to the size of the actual speakers. They come highly reccomended, I know JL Audio makes them.
I just bought my chili red union jack and all available accessories 7-20. I also happen to have a stereo shop, we've started installing "focal 5inch subs in the lift up deck lid we"ve put 5 of them in series with 850 watt amp the shake you unbelieveably! write me if ypu have any questions.

JL Audio will be producing a Stealthbox Subwoofer for the MINI Cooper and CooperS. It should be available by the first of December. There will be two models available, one for the driver's side trunk, and one for the passenger side. Each will house a single 10W3 woofer which is conservatively rated at 250 watts per woofer. Each enclosure takes up about 8 inches of floor space on each side of the trunk well area. With both enclosures installed, there's still a 16 inch space for access to the battery on the "S' models. This product should give you a pre-tuned solution that's optimized for the MINI. I have posted pictures in previous posts. If you would like additional info or pictures please e-mail me at dvertrees@jlaudio.com.
Good luck,

Good evening Shoe Wax,
Head units and radio's are generally the same thing. In car audio circles the radio is refered to as the head unit primarily because it is much more than just a radio anymore. It can now include DVD video as well as CD audio, and controls for CD changers and processors like equalizers and crossovers. I would suggest you visit a few local car stereo shops and listen to a few systems to find the kind of sound you like, and the price range of equipment that fits into your budget. After that it's a matter of finding an installer that you're confident can do the job for you well, and within budget.

>>Is it possible to keep the factory head unit, changer, and just add an amp and upgrade the speakers?
You can't add an amp to the factory head unit because their are no outputs. You can upgrade the speakers of course.

There are amplifiers available that accept a "high level input". These amplifiers can be connected directly to a factory head unit by way of the speaker wires. Although JL Audio amplifiers aren't the only ones that have this feature, they have a switch that allows you to select high or low level input. This could give you the option of building the rest of the system before deciding to change out the head unit or not.
This is the route I plan to take in my own system.

Thanks for the info davertrees. I was concerned because I'm getting the Nav. system and the changer in my car. I didn't want to waste money on the changer and then lose the Nav. Sys. voice if I upgraded the head unit. Let me know how it goes when you do the upgrade.

Good evening Nommaz,
I have to tell you I work for JL Audio, so am a bit biased...but I also have to say that Focal makes some sweet sounding speakers. If you have the budget for it, and like the sound of them, I don't think you can go wrong. I think you can do better than the Kicker woofers though, but then again I do work for JL Audio...
Good Luck,
DV

If what you say is true, you should have one hell of a system! W7 is a tough benchmark to beat.
Would like to hear you system when it's complete. Any chance you'll be competing in IASCA or USAC?
Good luck to you,

Dave, Nope, I used to want to compete IASCA a long time ago...I definitely have had the components and know-how to be successful...I also owned my own shop for about 5 years. But, in honesty, I feel that the interior of the MINI is not plush enough to tame early reflections to a level that would be competitive, especially since most serious competitors mod the interiors of their cars with sound absorptive treatments.(at least the good ones do...) I do feel that the install will be simple but difficult to pull off...I have that huge 36" long McIntosh MC4000M 6 channel job, the Brahma 10, an ADS 1/3 octave Digital EQ (actually, it's one of the 100 Orion Concept 97.2 units) Jordan JX-53 modules going in the floor, and Adire Audio Koda 6.5" midbass in the doors, headed up by a modded Sony ES CDX C90. Have an Audio Control 24XS crossover, but, I don't think it's got enough ground isolation or there is some power supply switching frequency incompatibility with the fans in the big Mac...heterodyne noise is coming in with the crossover in-line. Will be glad to show you pics when done. Just to give some info on the Brahma, the W7 has a higher Xsus than Brahma, but lower Xmag, but for a speaker with non custom tooled basket and surround parts (read off the shelf) the brahma performs amazingly well...Richard Clarke just tested one a week or so ago, and it took 32 kilowatts in his power test before audible distress set in. The Brahma also doesn't have the traditional parabolic BL curve most speakers do, it's more squared off, kind of like the FR of a bandpass Filter. However, it doesn't look as good or as unique as a W7. But in terms of SQ, hell I got rid of my Velodyne 12 because the Brahma worked much better. Heck, in .38 cubic ft, the thing has a Qts of .7
If you work for JL, I would like to chat with you sometime...It might be interesting conversation, especially since we both seem to love MINIs.

Good morning MINIjunky,
Glad to see I didn't **** you off. Seems many times persons with different "product alignments" tend to agrivate instead of communicate. I'm an industrial designer who manages the department at JL Audio that does the prototyping of Stealthbox enclosures, as well as building the company show cars and trade show exhibits. I'm not nearly as savy as you on the electronic aspects of each component, only as it relates to the actual enclosure volumes and loading in the car, etc. Sounds like you have the makings of an outstanding sound system. We use stock C90 head units in our current show vehicles, and have enjoyed very good performance out of them. I own a yellow Cooper S that is for the moment very stock. I've started installing a system, but have to work around "real jobs" at work, so am not moving very fast. Would love to see some pictures of your installation. Any ideas on interior mods? What are you planning for your front stage to keep up with all that bass? Are you keeping the back seat? If you like, you can reach me at dvertrees@jlaudio.com.
