I had Amsoil XL-7500 5W-30 in my '05. I didn't notice a power gain but it did feel smoother. It also seemed to stay clean for a good while and worked great in winter conditions (southern-winter conditions that is). In the next week or so I will be using Amsoil again when I change the 1000 mile mark. Maybe going for a longer lasting oil, though.
I have the 5W-30 ASL Amsoil in my MINI this time around, after a few
rounds with the OEM oil and Mobil 1.
I plan to do oil and filter changes about each 7500 miles with Amsoil
or something similar now that I'm out of maintenance agreement and won't
get any more free dealer oil services.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance is rated to last for 15,000 miles or one year while Amsoil ASL 5W-30 is rated to last 25,000 miles (with easy loads) or one year. They both basically cover you for a year, so I guess it's up to the user. But I've had my reservations about Mobil. They're just now getting into full, true synthetic oils where as Amsoil and a few others have been doing it for almost 20 years.
Mobil 1
I have been using mobil 1 synthetic for about 25 years. From what I understand they have always been true synthetic. This past year there was some discussion on the fact that the oil they make for diesels was changed to something other than true synthetic.
have put over 200,000 on an Acura legend, 150,000 miles on a Merkur, 130,000 on a toyota T-100, 70,000 on a Lexus Rx 300, and several other cars including VW, Chev. duramax, Isuzu pickup, and Datsun 240 z. I historically change my oil at 10,000 mile intervals. I have never had to have an engine gone into. Only the valve covers off for mechanical valve adjustments.
I guess I should do an advertisement for Mobil One. I now use it in my Mini.

I'm also quite the Mobile 1 loyalist. I've used it in all of my cars that I've ever owned and am a firm believer of its benefits. My dad used to rebuild engines on sports renault race cars, and he said you could literally tell just by looking inside the engines which ones ran mobile 1 and which ones didn't.

Well, Mobil 1 has been synthetic for a good while, but they've all been synthetic blends. They're first full true synthetic was the 5000 mile oil. But if you like it, use it. It'll still protect the engine well enough.
I changed from Syntech to Amsoil 5W-40 European Formula and have been very satisfied with the results. My 2003 MC runs noticeably smoother and quieter with the Amsoil. There also has been no burn-off with Amsoil like with Syntech. I will continue to use Amsoil and wish I had done it sooner.
The only oil in the Mobil1 family which meets BMW/MIN's specs for ACEA A3/B3 is Mobil 1 0W-40. Only the European-sourced version of Castrol Syntec 5W-30 (not the US-made version commonly available in car parts chain stores) meets the ACEA A3/B3 standard. I'm not certain where Amsoil fits on this spectrum.

Might want to check your specifications in the book...page 174. Putting the wrong oil in your vehicle and having a failure will void your warranty if they test the rig out.
Approved oils are 5w30 and 5w40 per the book. Also mini recommends Castrol...run the full synthetic and you'll be fine. Older engines you may want to move to 10w.

depending on how you run your car and how frequent your oil changes are...i've heard the filter could withstand increased use. Although this does not fall in line with your warranty, but I have been in a bind where I couldn't get the cap off of the filter housing on my other car and it had to wait an additional 1500miles-ish from a 5k interval change with synthetic.
Figure you can oil change at 3000 miles or as much as 5000 miles as stated with many synthetic oils...but yes as increased intervals the filter should be changed...as should it be changed every time you change the oil....

with amsoil 10-30 and their filter with synthetic media, now all synthetic media my 01 turbo vw with mods to about 250 hp 270 tq has 170,150 miles on it, changed every 10,000, it takes about a qt between changes due to occasional 20-25 lb boost, when i get a mini i will run do the same
I went to the Castrol web site looking for some technical information on their oils only to find out that their web site is purely synthetic, totally animated, and offers no technical information what so ever on their oils. Simply put a total waste of time. Mini recommends Castrol and I didn't know if there is a difference between the european version and the US version. Apparently there is. Also the manual in my 06 Cooper doesnt' specify the oil change intervals, only refers to the OBC to tell me when to change the oil. Hummm!

castrol syntec is NOT REAL synthetic check the spec for your engine, amsoil is so far advanced over most other oils when a new spec comes out they stick it on the container, vw uses 5-40 syntec and amsoil matches that with several oils, i prefer the 10-30 for turbo use, real synthetics flow at such a low temp the lower 5-30 means nothing, check out dave mann performance oil technology there is much info
I had some good info as far as the numbers go...but it seems the two are pretty matched as far as numbers go, ASMOIL is a bit better in sub freezing weather. If you look on the Castrol webside for the PDS under the MSDS/PDS sheets you can find the specs. Amsoil can be found though google pretty quickly.
Honestly I run Castrol Syntec in my current rig and amsoil in the tranny...no issue for over 60k miles and the oil always comes out nice and clean. AMSoil has always been geared to look at racing...just thoughts..it's your car, put it what you want.
