Hey Noka, and welcome to the website.
I didn't get the sunroof because it adds nearly 60 pounds onto the roof of the car, and it doesnt have a full cover, only a screen. A lot of people had complaints about it rattling, but I'm sure if I would have gotten it, I would have been happy with it. It is all up to the person who buys it wheather they are going to like it or not.

drive it during the day when it rains a little, and you can see the raindrops on the car.its a beautiful thing...and i think makes the car feel much bigger from the inside..

Welcome to MCO noka!
I have the sunroof on my MINI and I love it. I live in Los Angeles county and I make use of it day and night. I've had my MINI since november, been through heavy rain and burning heat and I have to say that when I pop that sucker open it's all worth it (not in the rain of course). So far I have had no problems with noise or rattles, and the passengers I have had so far compliment the unique design of the roof. The roof itself is large and there is even an opening and sun shade for the rear passengers. I will admit that it gets pretty warm under the roof on hot days, but with the windows down and the roof either cracked or fully open it's not noticeable. Sometimes on my lunch breaks at work I sit around or nap in the car and it gets too hot I make sure to park under some shade. I say try testing one out with the sunroof if it's available. Like SuperMINI03 said, I'm pretty sure that if you choose to get it you won't be disappointed.

Well,

Thank you for the comments. Bkk is Bangkok, and it is in Thailand. The Mini car price overhere is amazing high that you would scream. It take me 6 months to consider it.
It's about 50K. I think you could buy Nice Poche in US.

The weather in Bkk is extremely hot. The rain drop you said is what I also imagine.
If I put 100% film block, it would help to cut the heat from the direct sun?

???Wonder...wonder.

Noka-
I live in Hawaii. Hot but we have trade winds. People that have sunroofs really like them for the added view out and open feeling but in a sunny climate you will get hotter. A 100% tint defeats the purpose of having a sunroof- might as well call it a moonroof. If you don't mind that then you can open it when you need more ventilation. If you run the air conditioner you will work it more due to the added heat from the sun through the glass.
I did not get the sunroof- only a shade to protect from the heat and lots of holes in it. You also loose about 2 inches of headroom- I checked it out at the dealership today. I'm 5'6" and my head almost hits the ceiling with the sunroof in place while in my mini I have lots of headroom. Also I am lots cooler with my white roof.

Too bad about the $50,000 price. I hear that the mini cooper has arrived in China and the price is about the same as your area. They still plan to sell a few hundred. The car is small so it would be well suited to lots of traffic.

$50,000!! Wow, I thought we had it bad in Mexico, where cars cost about 20-25% more than in the States...

I love my sunroof! If you're not planning on serious racing, I definitely recommend it!

Well...well....well....
I am pretty sure I will have lot of problems later. Beside the cool image, it's heavy, hot and less room like you guy said. I'm also worried if it pass 2-3 years the water from rain might leak as well.
The option I want mainly is the leather seat, xenon light and the sunroof come w/ it.
Well, it seem like I have to live with heat and more sunblock then.

I am small woman so I do not worry about the space of ceiling. No way my head will touch it.
However, thank you for all the experience and informations.

Go for the sunroof!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE mine! I live in a very rainy climate and have had no issues with leaking. It's so nice to be cruizing down the road with a light rain and pop the sunroof up for ventilation. And when it's nice out, with both windows down and the sunroof open, it's a convertible with a hatchback. If you are concerned about heat issues, many Arizona state mini owners, where it's very hot here in the US, have had the sunroof tinted more.

The sunrood is a must , heat has never been an issue for me, and I ahve teh leather seats as well, though I would imgaine the heat in the leather oen way or another will be more uncomfortable than the sunroof, plus when everythign is opened up it is like having a convertable. I enjoy it, never had any problems with the sunroof..

Dude, try adjusting the seat height next time. I'm 6'2" and my head does not come anywhere near the headliner in my sunroof equipped car.

There is a post on that other Mini site on tinting
that states not to tint the sunroof because of the
different expansion and contraction properties of
the glass vs. tint. It said the glass could break. Anyone
heard anything about this? BTW it was one post and there
were no replys..pro or con that I could find....

I would avoid the sunroof for two reasons: monsoons and mold. I used to live in PTY (Panama for those not in the airline baggage industry), which is very hot and humid too. I found any vehicle with a sunroof was much more prone to leaks from around the seals of the sunroof, and that once inside your car, moisture = mold. My cars with leather interiors required treatment every month, otherwise a green mold would begin to cover the leather, so I'd avoid that too. Also, its a good idea to buy some aftermarket rain tires, as it helps to reduce hydroplaning during heavy downpours.

Motor on

wow, lots of opinions on the sunroof!

I have an 03 MCS with sunroof, and I live in Texas: it's hot here, very hot, sunny, and humid.

I love my sunroof!

I don't think it gets too hot, even in our intense Texas sun, or I should say, I don't think the sunroof is contributing much to the heating of the car when it is parked. When driving, it is not an issue because the A/C works so well. I have the auto climate control, and while I don't use the auto feature in winter, I love it in summer, it works great!
I find the pullout perforated shade completely adequate!
Early in the morning sometimes it is still cool enough to open the sunroof and windows, and then it's almost like a convertible!
I love the sunroof because of the light it lets in. It does make the interior of the car seem to be bigger than it is, it contributes greatly to an "open" atmosphere!.

2 more things:
Tinting is usually done with film that is elastic, you should not have a problem at all with different expansion coefficients. Maybe what that person was referring to is the following: tint film does have a tendency to lift off after some years, and that is a function of the amount of solar irradiation. This will be more intense on the roof rather than on the sides, so the tint film on the sunroof may start to show the bubbling earlier than on the sides. Otherwise, tinting of the sunroof via film is no problem whatsoever.
One point worth mentioning is that the sunroof creates quite a bit of wind noise when open. When just tilted (in the back), it is acceptable, but when fully open the wind noise is pretty strong. I don 't mind but others may.
In terms of the rattles, yes, they may appear, but there are fixes for all sunroof rattles, as far as I know.

Cheers,
Markus

Thanks for the tint info...I have had an EB/S and now
have a LY/W with sunroof and I agree about the shade.
Closed on hot days and open at night.....

The sunroof is a pretty subjective choice. I personally like the "Panorama" dual glass panel arragement but the only thing I don't like about it is the lack of a solid sunshade. I think MINI should give buyers the option between the perforated shade and the solid one. I have test driven a MCS with it and you still feel the heat with the glass closed and the shade on, so the decision ultimately relies on whether you want to have the "Open" car feeling at all times and the slightly increased cabin heat.

I wonder whether it's possible to make that as a mod ourselves, basically by glueing a thin sheet of fabric to the top of the perf screen. Cut out some thin black silk to the size of the perf screen when it is extended, then glue the front to the plastic bar, and the rear to the perf screen as far back as possible. Probably do this on top of the perf screen, and through the open sunroof. It should still roll up ok as before, but one way to test this is to first apply the cloth by means of some good tape, so it is removable.

Any thoughts on this?

If the tint can be used on the sunroof there is no reason to
change the shade. The tint would block heat as well as UV and
3M would also offer protection from glass break. I am going to
tint it when I do the windows and post a follow up..

I think the concept of the perforated sunshade works wonders in colder climates and in Europe where summers are typically not near as hot as states located in the "Sunbelt". I am sure that MINI will address this minor flaw for 2004 (I hope).

My Discovery has dual sunroofs with the same type of cover... not solid. I've **** never**** even noticed the increased heat or glare due to that after 7 years in the Phoenix AZ heat.

I know the Mini sunroof is h-u-g-e compared to the Discovery but I'm pretty heat-tolerant... rarely even run the A/C below 110F/43C unless my wife is riding with me. I prefer to roll the windows down and turn the radio up.

One more thing,

If I want to put on the rack for suitcase or bike, it will bother the sunroof?
Can I still open and operate the sunroof ? Oh it really bother my decision.

I did check many sites and also the gallery, they show that you can put on the rack but I am not sure if we can open it!

I couldn't image my Mini without the sunroof but it does, admittedly, get hot when the car is parked for a while, even with the sunshades extended. Still worth it though. I'll be putting a "cling" sunroof flag up top (just covers the glass, not the surrounding roof) at least for the summer months and see if that helps a bit.

On a different note, January 2003 build; no rattles or noises from the sunroof.
