Why blur or hide license plate

Not sure if this is the best place to ask this question. But you are the photo experts, and just way better than anything I do.

My question is why when posting do so many blur or hide the License Plate ?

Just interested and wondering if I was missing something.

I think there are some who feel more secure about protecting their identity. I haven't posted any photos of my car, but might consider blurring the plate if I ever post photos. Since I don't have a ton of external mods, I doubt anyone cares to see another green mini w/a black top.

Sometimes ppl "forget" where they are and that anything they write on the Internet is preserved forever. Then they go post about how fast they drove on the Baltimore Beltway at 3 AM and then wonder why the cops are sitting there the next night waiting for them.

BTW, this has been discussed before and someone pointed out exactly that happening (i.e., the authorities finding information on breaking traffic laws and then acting upon it. I believe Mbabs wrote about it).

I'd simply rather not have the public be able to get my name and a ddress and tie it to my NAM ID.

Besides its a JB car, when I burn out the plate the whoole rear is than a nice smooth black PS burn some tint into the windows and its a while new look to the car.

I display my front tag with pride though. (Well one of them)

When I post a photo of someone Auto-Xing, I do it.

Rumor had it that a couple of other car companies had been checking out the forums, and denying warranty work to people who participated in a "Speed Contest".

I think it actually probably ended up winning me bonus points with the service department, I think the SA wants to get into HPDEs and they know I know what I'm talking about when it comes to the car which makes theor job easier(sometimes ).

Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me.

In most cases, when the license plate is removed/blurred/painted over, I find it noticeable and attracts its own attention, disrupting the real photo.

Not to mention your plate is public information and easily obtainable by others.

For those reasons I don't remove plates, with the rare exception of a permanent place on web site graphics or something.

Couldn't I easily get your plate number seeing you around town if you live in my area?I mean it is pretty public if you think about it. In Maryland you can go to the MVA and fill out a form to have your personal ID kept secure. Just some random thoughts.

I just don't bother with doing that. Like others have said, it is public information anyway. I would be more worried about a SS# than a plate #.

Also, authorities just can't "pull you over" for posting you were driving over the posted speed limit. They need official photographic proof or need to be witness of the violation. Sure, they may read posts and hang out where you violated a particular law, but, they can't stop you if they see you and you aren't doing anything wrong.

Jay, you need to talk to Michael (mbabs, former DCMM Pres). I believe he is the one who on several threads said local county police had gone and staked out areas based on people "boasting" here on NAM. Yeah, they got to catch them but how hard is that going to be when the same ppl never learn?

Do you think that guy who boasted of his speeds on the Baltimore Beltway isn't going to go do it again? Heck, he even gave the exits he was at!

"secure" is a relative term.

My adress is public info after all it is posted on my mail box but you don't see me posting that in every photo why would I post my plate? It took months before I even included a geographic region in my profile location. And my one Frapper tying me to a town is outdated and off by over 1k miles. I also only give out my first name.

Some people (myself included) prefer not to share a ton of personal ID info on a public forum I don't see what the big deal is.

As someone who works in an area of "law enforcement" (I use the term loosely...not police), I know it is very easy to get information about people...I deal with fraud on a daily basis. From a plate number, you can get a name and address...and for a price, a drivers license number. From there...depending on the county...if you have any criminal records, like criminal traffic records, or even civil cases, even your SS# could be posted online for all to find, if they know where to look!

However, anyone who drives behind you on the highway, or looks in your mailbox, could get the same info...this is why you should keep tabs on your credit report.

For a DH cop, your plate number will give them your address, license, insurance info, etc. They could wait near your house if they know you have a speeding problem, or even non street legal parts on your car. I don't know of this actually happening, but it is possible, especially when they have a quota to meet and 2 days until the end of the month.

So IMHO, if you are talking about illegal activities, don't post your plate number...You never know who is putting the two together. You may live in a county that wants to crack down on street racing. These forums would be a good way for them to get to the bottom of the problem.

I really think people have watched Fast and the Furious too many times. Do people really drive around worrying if today is the day someone got my tag number, then drove to my house got my mail, then made a key to my house while I had my car in the shop getting an oil change and went into my house and made my bed. HAHA. This is funny!

No but say someone really s someone else off then they read about the little incident, looked in that persons gallery got the plate # then name and adress and decide to wait up at the residence for that person, road rage is a serious problem. Not talking about just law enforcement but also some unsavory characters out there as well, and they don't care about having probable cause or a warrant. Face it, there is a ton of info on the internet for EVERYONE to see, not everyone is good, it's simple protection to keep certain connections from being easily made. (Hopefully that was vague enough to keep this going without being to vague for you to realize that you could get into a serious situation) Funny it is not.

Actually, there is another reason to blur that plate number. In most states the Department of Motor Vehicles will provide driver's license and automobile ownership information to any one who claims they were involved in an accident and have the plate number. A good thief who now has your auto plate number, driver's license number, name, date of birth, description and driver's license expiration date can now apply for credit in your name since Federal Law makes it illegal to require you to give up your social security number in order to obtain credit.
