I came across one of those riding a motorcycle going up to Lick from San Jose on Mt Hamilton Rd, the other side. I tried to move it to the side but when I approached it, it haunch like it was about to jump on me – it freaked me out so I got a stick and persuaded it to the side of the street.
Since I’ve learned that they go to the roads to collect heat during these times of the year.
Also used to come across rattlers on the road also trying to get warm.
Holy cow that last shot is awesome Jim! Way to go with a random find. How cool is that!? Awesome stuff. That's probably my favorite pic of yours yet!
When I was in AZ I didn't know they even had tarantulas until I almost sat on one! They don't scare me but it cuaght me way off gaurd. Unfortunately the camera I had at the time sucked so no good pics of it.

Came across one of those slow moving critters on a dirt road near Bonampak MX. Out of curiosity, I nudged it with a long stick as you did. Wow! That thing took off in a hurry ! Lot's faster than I would ever have expected!
By the way, there are places in the world where you need to be careful not to run over drunks asleep on the road in addition to the snakes and spiders.
Okay, I have to ask. How in the world do you spot a spider, even one as large as a tarantula on the road, let alone a multi-colored gravel road ??
Are you the new X-Men character ? The one with Eagle-Eye Vision ?
No Eagle-Eye Vision here. It's a paved road with gravel shoulders. I saw what I thought was a rock in tne middle of the lane and went to straddle it. When the "rock" moved I realized what it was. I pulled off to the shoulder, grabbed the camera and shot away. I tried to "steer" it so I could get some shots with the car.
Thanks!
Jim
