August // Photo Poll // The Road Less Traveled
#5 got my vote......why?
*Its not "over treated", is very realistic and moving.
*The vast monutains and leading lines of the road draw you in.
*The solitude of the Mini makes you linger to look from foreground to horizon over and over.
*No powerlines, street signs or anything to distract.
*I wanna go there
Well done fellow photographer
PS: I so wanted to enter this month but have been up to my eyeballs moving our daughter across state for college.
Been sobbing to hard to take photos

Number 5 was great (in fact, they all were) but the thread title was "the road less travelled". I think the car needed to be "on" the road, not parked beside it.
Of course, that's why minis come in so many colors....

I really like the street sign.
Now that the contest is over, I can weigh in and thank everyone who had nice things to say about #5. As an outright novice photog, it was fun being in the mix and reading the comments.
For all those who said they "want to go there" all you have to do is attend MINIs in the Mountains next year and make a run up Mt. Evans. That pic was taken about 10:00 am, half-way up the summit trail with the MINI parked about 100 yards below the summit parking (elevation 14,240 feet). There was actually a bit more traffic up there that morning than it looks in the pic, so it was too big a risk to leave it parked on the road itself (I know that would have improved the pic).
Truthfully, I think the best pic won (#4). I instantly loved it. It shows the difference between someone who creates a really great composition in their mind ahead of time and then captures it, and a beginner like me who finds a nice spot, takes a hundered pictures from slightly different angles, and then sorts through them to "find" a composition.

Congrats.... I do have a question for you though. Is that your car or did you randomly see a mini driving next to a busy highway?
Just curious.
Thanks,
Mark

That's our car, I have a stunt driver for these occasions (my wife). She doesn't mind driving up and down the same road for half and hour (3 different times). I've got lots of ones on a similar theme.
I could just hear my wife now.... "just how long do I have to keep driving back and forth?? Hurry up already...."

I also think you're giving me too much credit. I had an idea for the photo, an empty road next to the freeway, but it took three attempts to get right. The first attempt the light was in the wrong direction, so we came back early in the morning (before 8am!!!) when the light should be in the other direction, the light wasn't right either, but I took a few shots from the other side of the road (between the roads). Those were the best of the bunch and I also had the idea the light would be in the right direction if I just pointed the other way, those ones worked reasonably well.
So my final photo is pretty different from my initial idea, different angle, different direction. Also I sifted through about 200 frames to get this one, looking for the one where everything was just right. So I'm doing more or less the same as you.
We also took a few at another location, you can see one of those in my gallery.
One thing, I have my stunt driver (my wife) who doesn't object when I ask her to drive up and down the same road repeatedly so I can take the picture. That's the only safe way to get a picture of a MINI on the road, you can't just park on the road and go take a picture, that's dangerous. My wife is also my artistic advisor, she helps me choose the right shot, and comes up with sugestions, though this one was my idea.
Also when choosing a location, Google maps is really helpful, you can scout them out without even leaving your sofa.
My wife doesn't seem to mind, she's also artistic advisor so she can she what's going on and gets to participate in this. I just asked her, she doesn't mind, it was the getting out of bed too early which was the worst bit.
