Description:

My '13 MINI Roadster S was rear-ended and insurance is treating it as a total loss.

I am posting before letting insurance take it since we in the MINI community know the specialness of these MINIs. (I would have to select the buy-back option, which I will consider doing if there is interest)

The insurance considers the repair cost to be parts and labor that would be considerably less if there is someone who wants a DIY project.
If minor cosmetics - that figured into the repair estimate - are not a huge deal to someone (paint chip in front bumper, wrinkle under the right tail light that does not affect the boot opening, closing, or seating) basically she needs the visible backend stuff. I've seen used parts listed (in Chili Red) for under $1000, plus shipping or pick up.

She's got a MINI-Do-More hitch that took a hit and would need to be removed. I do not know if the frame needs straightening, but am told it looks like an alignment only. She's at a MINI centric shop now to get an evaluation.

She is auto/manual with paddle-shifters, 108K on the odo, heated seats, great paint condition (had been wrapped for several years)
NM Engineering CAI. I am told the spoiler is JCW (I'm sure the experts will correct me if I'm wrong!) and a rarity to be able to replace the OEM active spoiler with a stationary one -- new about $1000.

Located in Frederick MD (21701); will be drivable if the MINI Do More hitch can be made to stop rubbing on the rear tire - I'm checking into that and should have an answer soon. Not looking to part out.

I have about a week to figure it out -- ask any questions via DM.

I should have mentioned in my last reply, I am in Frederick MD .. about 40 miles west of Washington DC.

I have a son with a 916 area code .. seems like it would be a long way away.

My apologies, I did not get a notification from NAM that you wrote -- and somehow the message was buried when I added the location note the next day.
I no longer have the MINI .. but I does drive me crazy when people ignore messages, so my apologies, I did not intend to.
I am deleting the post now, hopefully this message still goes through.

Roadsters command higher prices than regular R56 MCSs so I'm surprised this is a write off. My R56 got rear ended in 2020 with damage to the hatch and rear bumper. The tail lights were unaffected - mild hit from ******* that let their foot slip off the brake, and they ran too.

Damage came to about $3400 for insurance IIRC with a pro body shop doing the work, but the caveat here is that the hatch was replaced with a used one painted to match my pepper white and they did a good job. Maybe used rear trunks for R59s are harder to come by?

This could be a way to get save a Roadster for someone capable of the body work - sadly I'm not (and I'd love a MT roadster in BRG)

cheers

I was suprised that the insurance deemed it a loss, also, but the appraiser determined that the frame had buckled and that drove the estimate.
I do not know how fast the person who hit me was going -- it was a 35 mph zone, I believe, and it wasn't until the last minute that he realized the line of vehicles in front of him had stopped (for a red light); it was a hard enough hit that even though I saw him coming / not stopping and instinctively nailed the brake pedal, the MINI was pushed into the vehicle in front me me -- causing minor, but additonal, damage to my MINI.

I saw the potential for salvaging the MINI - dyring breed that the Roadster is - but not by me, bought it back from the insurance company and found her a new home retired in FL where all good Roadsters should live out their retirement. She is being enjoyed by a multi-MINI family.

I "promised" to delete this thread since she is no longer available and either I forgot, or the somewhat tempermental NAM forum is up to hijinx. So I will try again.

Safe travels.
