Unplugged the ASD bypass

I remember when the F56 was first introduced. I bought a 2014 Cooper S. I immediately made a harness and bypassed the ASD. People argued that they could hear the engine work harder on sport mode....etc....etc. I never agreed with this....I believed they did not really know how a real engine sounded.
So got rid of the S and got a 2016 JCW. Immediately transferred the bypass harness. Have been enjoying the car ever since.
Well selling it ...so pulled the harness to use in my new BMW.. OMG the car sounds awful and fake. I can not believe that some people drive their cars with this irritating super fake sound.
If you have not coded the ASD out or purchased a bypass harness from Technic...DO IT!
Forget the rear sway bar replacement as being the #1 addition....get rid of that ASD first!

I disabled it via the BimmerCode app and couldnt tell a difference with it on or off. Granted, I'm practically straight piped so Im sure that helps too.

The R56 had a noise maker. I used a cork and clamps to stop it.
ASD is on most modern BMW's. The Justa's don't have. Check RealOEM..

Mini put in a little speaker in the “trunk” that pipes in engine sounds to give a sporty sound. Some say they can hear It some say they can’t, it all depends on who you talk to

Ok, then it's basically the same thing I eliminated on my r56 back by the throttle body that went I to the firewall. Just didn't think too hard about the acronym.

Not a speaker - just a module designed to monitor engine speed, driving mode, throttle position, speed, etc. to "enhance" the engine sound through the existing speakers. I find my car too quiet without ASD and prefer to have it on, but as you see on this thread and ANY other thread discussing ASD, people fall on both sides of the fence.

Sirius - I remember when I first disconnected mine. The car sounded quiet....but I could hear the actual exhaust sound. Now after 2 years without it and knowing the car pretty well it sounds so fake I can't believe it. It just sounds like super fake. I guess if they had a mic back by the exhaust but with ASD you can't hear the exhaust.....well I can't - well maybe the odd pop!

I just wanted to give the perspective - thought it might interest some.

Years ago when I first saw ASD mentioned, I had the impression that it amplifies actual engine sound through the audio system. However, the document shows that ASD generates completely fake synthesized sound.

So ASD is a modern version of SoundRacer: http://www.soundracer.se/?p=98

First thing I did when I leased our F31 was install the Technic bypass.

A few few weeks ago I used a ReachNow Clubman in PDX and couldn’t believe how irritating the ASD sounded.

From another thread. Can't confirm if it is correct.

Automatic Sound Design = Off (“Active Sound Design” ASD_01 control unit)

My car doesn't have that feature. No exhaust sound comes from the speakers (maybe because my car is actually a BMW model with a Mini body?). My exhaust is of course louder in the Sport mode because that opens the other exhaust pipe's valve (like the JCW Pro Exhaust remote control does)

I used BimmerCode as well. I did notice a difference, especially on the highway a moderate speed. Like you, I mostly run the exhaust wide open.

If I go to Sport mode straight from Green my 2020 JCW changes sound significantly. I would say it's more than opening the second pipe. If not these cars have a really great natural interior sound.

I turned off the piped-in engine sound. I can now hear the induction sound (I have a K&N filter installed) and even at its low levels, it sounds a lot better than the fake noise. I also programmed the car to start in Sport Mode and I have left the valve open in the JCW exhaust permanently which also helps.

If you use the Bimmerlink app ( Google Playstore ), it has a feature when you connect to switch off the ASD system. Bimmerlink is I think affiliated with Bimmercode.
As the GeekGuy stated above, I have done the same on my Cooper S with the Eventuri and custom exhaust, and Speedy sounds great!
