car is "jerky"

recently it seems my car is "jerky" and or, lack of smoothness - Hard to describe but I notice for example when I/m driving along at say 30-40 mph and the engine is in a "relaxed" mode the car has a bit of a stumble - it seems to be performing ok and idles smoothly - I/m acutely aware of not lugging the engine when this is happening at the
same time it seem pronounced when you're not hard on the gas - I know just be hard on the gas all the time

Any thoughts on what this might be or where to start? I hesitate to take into the shop with those symptoms because it opens an entire can of worms.

thanks in advance

Steve

Look at the top engine mount...see if it has any black gunk ozzing out...when they leak...the car feels less smooth when you shift up/down....
