Steering Wheel and Roll Bar installed

Due to some issues with the bar it took a lot longer to install and is not fully buttoned up. Still need to work the side panels and hange the harnesses.

Wheel need a bit of finish work as well, and will be completed soon.

These are the 2 latest mods, both are not fully complete but are functional.

Info please

Whose roll bar is that? Doesn't look like an Autopower. Safety Devices? I like the way it fits.

330mm and no idea. The model is Mod 78, I can't seem to find any thickness data. I can tell you it is not as bulky as the OEM and makes the JCW look svelte.

Safety Devices. They only make it for non-sunroof Mini's. If you have a sunroof be prepared to mod this mod to get it to fit. We had to cut off about 1.5 inches and make and weld on new mounting pads. Then since we had to grind off the finish in some areas to weld we sent it out to be beadblasted bare and re-coated with powder.

OK next question.

Who on this side of the pond sells Safety Devices? My MINI is a non sunroof car, so that part is easy. I see your bar has the removable diagonal. Was that included? Is that seat belt bar running across behind both seats? Was that included or did you fab it up? Are you just running the rear bar or are you doing a full cage? Looks very nice. That was a whole lot of work you did to get that into your sunroof car.

Thanks.

Only running the back part of the full cage, so it's a roll bar. When buying the bar there are many options available. Diagonal can be bolt or welded in. A full X brace can be used instead of a single diagonal. Harness bar can also be added both welded or bolt in. I went with the bolt in for both the harness and diagonal eschwing the full X brace for now. I have the other part of the X brace welded in depending on how space is utilized. I'll see after running with the single diagonal for a while.

Check here http://stable-energies.com/prodinfo.asp?number=SD-B24 for a picture of cage. That is the also the US importer. I purchased it through a Mini based place and it was drop shipped from Stable Energies. If I did it again I would cut out the middle man and deal directly with Stable Energies.

One thing we did was remove the forward facing tabs. Since I do not intend on installing the full cage I feltit was best to remove them from both a safety and looks issue. If you want I can take some better pictures of areas interest you may have.

We do intend on re-installing the rear side panels, unfortuantly due to the extra work involved during the install we ran out of time before I needed the Mini for a track day.

I believe the fit of the Saftey Devices is far superior to that other brand that is out there. Could you take some shots of the roll bar mountings to the car, at the rear brace floor connection & at the main hoop floor connections? Also when you get the rear panels done I'd like to see them too.

I agree with taking those forward facing plates off. Too close to the helmet, unless using a front cage.

The X brace sure must be strong, but I need to carry my tires & things in the back for the trip to the track. The X brace will keep me from doing that. I'd most likely go with the setup you have.

I can see why you sold your Schroth harness'. Now you can go with a 5 or 6 point set.

Thanks for the help.

Looks great. I'm thinking about getting a quick release wheel, but I haven't been able to get the nerve...

Crashton,

I put some pictures up here http://picasaweb.google.com/gnatster...arMountingPics

I can't easily get to the Main Hoop mount as the carpet is in the way. Next time we have to access that area I'll get some.

For the rear leg mounts the surface on the side rail was cleaned to the bare metal and a flat plate slightly larger then the one welded to the base of the bar was fabricated to square up the area. This was welded to the frame rail, drilled, tapped and then painted. The backing plate was bolted into place and then welded in place. This was then painted to protect the area.

I tried to take photos from various angles to best show how it all mounted.

Thanks for your help gnatster. The pictures did help answer my questions. There is one of those roll bars in my future. Good luck at the track.

Momo P/N 2008. There is a thread in the track area the shows the machining required to have the turn signals self cancel and the horn to beep. Search "Momo Hub 2008"

Put the back panels back in.

Since we had the back apart took some better pictires of the rear legs mounting.

Also moved the Cruise Control to the dash.
