Thanks for the reply and the great pic, edubledie !

I like that look an your MINI with the dark tinted glass. ... and the black bonnet stripes.

Those are the 9 inch squares, I believe. Anybody have a pic with the 7 inch or smaller squares ?

Honestly? I wouldn't do it. One of my favorite features of the black roof is the sunroof blends into the top. And when you look at your beautiful car now, the mirror caps set it off just right. I honestly wouldn't do it...

Oh, I will add - if you are set on getting the checkers? I would definitely say go full roof. 100%

Well, if I do it, it will be the full roof (no perforated sunroof due to the added maintenance and shorter life expectancy).

Yes, that was my original question... will the checkers on the roof be TOO MUCH and detract from the overall appearance of the MINI ? Seems the overwhelming majority think it would look good. But I'm not 100 percent sure yet. Part of my brain is agreeing with you, Wanna.

I would love to see it before I decide, but.... I'll have to use my imagination and base the decision on how I think it will look. Tough one.

Sounds like a plan ! Too bad you're not old enough to drink or buy beer, I'd have you bring over a six pack of Yuengling Black & Tan as your buffer rental payment.

I'm probably going to be doing one of the MINIs next month so get ready.

And are you saying I should remove the bonnet stripes if I'm going to checker the sunroof ? I've seen a lot of MINIs with checkers on the roof and bonnet stripes... looks good, IMO.

Thanks for your input !!
see, these sota posts are hard to respond too.
The beautiful thing about U-ification is it's all about "U"

I think..... and it is only what i "think"
They (the bonnet stripes and the checked roof) are both awesome and pleasing individually.
Yet may be over pleasing when combined..
As far as the logo ontop of the checks ... I think the logo detracts from the checks

post a pic i may change my mind

i will say i have never seen a MINIi i didnt like
and your is beautiful indeed.
so
keep the motoring spirit alive.

Okay... we're on the same wavelength, M2M. I'm worried about it being TOO much also, as I've said.

Well, I can't give you a pic but here's the best I can do. Mike has been gracious enough to work with me and send me various diagrams on what the roof would look like from overhead. Here's the one I'm considering:

That makes a lot of sense, M2M. I'm not sure the MINI Wings logo on top would be the first thing to catch one's eye though. It might be the entire roof, actually.

I'm considering another option and I'll ask Mike to be so kind as to draw up a sketch of this one: No checkers on the roof. Just the MINI Wings logo on the sunroof. But where the center is black, have it done in 2" checkers to bring in my checker theme. MUCH more subtle than having the whole roof checkered. Much more.

Thoughts ?

If I could just find a picture of this guys Mini on NAM I want you to see it. He has a black Mini w/the larger roof checks & it looks really good (amazing actually). I don't think you need to worry about the check size on your mirrors vs the check size on your roof. Any size check is fine but I am a fan of the larger to medium sized checks.

Teresa ! You, young lady, are making this decision much more difficult. Of course, you know that already.

So... you obviously do not like my latest idea. What is it about that design that you find unappealing ? Don't like the MINI wings on the sunroof ? Or you don't like the idea of the center of the logo being checkered ? Or is it simply that you're so convinced the entire roof should be checkered that any other option is totally unacceptable ? Inquiring Chili Reds and Pepper Whites want to know !

Here's a thought. If you're worried about the top checkers being too much, why not get them done in black and grey, rather than black and white? They'll still be noticeable, the chrome MINI logo will go well, and the grey/black will not be so "in your face" against the black roof. Keep the theme, but integrate the tones.

if i were you id have a white pinstripe on your trim to match your stipes on the hood. the idea would be to make it look like the stripes are on the side so maybe a quarter of an inch on both sides pm me if u want me to make a pic for u

I must say, I hadn't considered that option.

I do see your point about that being a more subtle change. Just not sure how gray and black would look with the white and black checks on the mirrors and the other checks I have on the car. But I'll give it some consideration.

THANKS !

This is what my sunroof looks like. I actually got some wide white pinstripe material ( 6 inches wide I think) from the local autozone and measured the roof out for center and laid the stripes myself. The black is actually the glass from the sunroof. I bought a cheap board cutter from office depot and measured each one exactly and then cut them with the borad cutter. The cuts are perfectly straight. I believe i had about 20 bucks wrapped up in it all together. It tood me about 2 hours to lay the squares. It also cuts down on the sunlight coming into the car so it is more comfortable on hot days.

Looks nice, jclayto ! Appears to be done professionally !

I think I like the "sunroof only" checkered look with a white roof more than the black roof.

Have you considered checkered mirror caps with yours ??

I agree that it probably wouldnt look as good on a black roof. I am going to do the mirrors someday. I just seem to keep finding other things to eat my time up.

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO....K !

After much deliberation and deeeeeeeep thought, I've made a decision on the question of "Should I or Shouldn't I?".

I am making a mod and I'll post pics in a few weeks when I have completed it. Until then...

Thanks to all who offered their support and/or advice.

I posted that before seeing other posts talking about doing the whole roof. I was thinking in terms of just doing the sunroof with the black/grey checkers (with the wings logo, of course), and leaving the surrounding roof all black. That way, the black/grey combo would blend in well with the black of the roof, rather than competing with the black/white checkers on the rest of the car. Sort of a "bright black/white checkers against the red areas, and subdued checkers up top to keep the roof area dark".
