Is that true or is it simply heat and pry?
There are definitely screws...dont know how you want to deal with them

Hmm I take it they must be screwed in from the inside since you can't just unscrew them. Do you have any pics of them?

I mean...go open your hood and you can see where they are. they protrude from the sides.

You can't see the screw from the outside

Hmmm werd, so much for that idea...

The 05-06 projector lights don't have these screws apparantly?

Painted headlight housing looks better with the projector headlights anyways... haha

yah overall the 02-04 headlights are pretty ugly compare to the facelift ones (both the xenon and halogens)

Mine is an 02 and during the prying apart process the screw part just broke loose. It doesn't damage the light. I just trimmed it up and the sealent holds them together very well.

i did blackout on headlight rings and side chrome using self etching paint with light sanding on chrome parts. it lasted for about 2months then it started to peel. any advice on making it stick better on the second try? was also thinking about wide blackout tape.

When I blacked mine out I sanded them and then used adhesive promoter prior to the Krylon Fusion. The instructions say you don't use primer, but I went ahead and did it. My side markers have stayed pretty good.

The door handles, headlight trim rings, and gas cap were done professionally.

Back in the day when I had a WRX, they called this the "Koji mod." On the 02-23 WRX it looked really cool. I did it, it only took a couple hours. I waited for my wife to leave one day so she wouldn't freak out about putting headlights in her oven...

Anyway, definitely use engine paint. A couple of guys tried colormatched paint and it took on a weird brown tinge, assumed to be the paint getting cooked. I used black grill paint because I had a black car, and it looked absolutely awesome. Now that I know it can be done on the MINI with similar effort, I might go for it. I'll have to look and imagine how it will turn out.

Thanks...But I still may not repeat that ordeal again...the whole process was just too hairy...oven, prying, oven high, pry harder, oven higher, break a few tabs, dig and dig the old seal out, prep can, paint, RTV reseal, tape lens back on, pray nothing stray was left inside and the new seal is good for the rain, repeat for other lamp, hope you didn't warp the lamp so it will fit back in the bonnet... :impatient

i know this is an old thread but i did this mod today:

flash:

no flash:

missed some spots on the skirt :D

The mod wasn't hard, per se, but it requires patience (i never painted anything in my life besides a wall when i was 12). And when i say patience i mean, when i was all done i found out that i put the wrong headlamp cover on each side so i had to remove them and do it over again :X
