Funny. I called MINIPeabody when my car got hit and they said that their preferred body shop was a place in Melrose--the name of which I now cannot even remember. I took it to Julian at Sublime instead.
That is indeed strange. I wouldn't have even known about Sublime if MINI of Peabody hadn't recommended him.
For the most part you're paying for craftmanship. To pay for work that's worth 1/3 the cost of the vehicle, it's just not worth it. Unless money is no object, I would pay to have a pro detailer do the work.

I have an 04 IBW with absolutely no dings but several wind scratches and pits in the nose. Lately, I've been thinking that I'd like the car to look more like this, minus the carbon fibre: http://konkyphotography.com/webphoto..._9656sized.jpg
I know black is a hassle in any environment, but the car looks terrific.
The shop in our area that does the best work charges $6,000 to change the color of a brand new MINI. It would be extra if they had to do any repair work, but I don't know if there would be a reduced price if they were repainting the car the original color.
Yes, or more!
It really depends on the prep work and to the extent you want it done.
They took my whole car apart, and it took almost a month, but they do it right!
