3. Crashton - unpainted or silver

the one on my car is the base silver color that was on the grill when purchased.
im going to go back and paint it over with silver paint since there is
bare metal showing where i cut it. I don't think it would rust to a point
it would make it drip orange water, but just to be safe.

and yes, the nuts are 8mm.

Mesh Grilles?

Aren't you guys worried about the amount of air flow you are now restricting? Seems like you are cutting that flow in half.... or more? What do you think?

I don't think airflow is diminished such that it's an issue. What I have noticed is that I no longer have bugs imbedded in my IC!

Are you saying that the material is steel & not aluminum? If it's steel it is going to rust. If it's aluminum I'd like one, if it's steel I'll pass.

jeff, i didn't have any red enamel paint laying around... so i have silver
or black if you want those. the silver is painted silver over the galvanized
silver paint that it came in.

i painted them and drying now.

it sticks to magnet, so it's galvanized steel. it's real easy to remove and
paint if it does rust (which i dont think it would to the extent that it
would be orange) or use it as a template and make your own.

i took you off the list for now, if you're still interested, let me know!

I believe what I picked up at Home Depot is aluminum. I'll have to check. But here are pics of mine, painted white:

As far as air flow, that was brought up in an earlier thread about this mod. It apparently has little to no effect.

^^ good job! can you put a magnet on yours and see if
it grabs it? the mesh itself looks almost identical to mine.

can't wait to roll my car out of the garage and take a pict this weekend.

It is steel!! I thought it was aluminum 'cause I got the exact same thing pictured in Ian's how-to, where he says it's aluminum. Luckily I painted mine with Rust Oleum

I have the steel one, almost a year and absolutely no rust. I sprayed it with hi-temp clearcoat when installed. There IS an aluminum one I've found, but the mesh is tighter and the piece is much flimsier than the galv steel.

oh the irony!...

...less than a week ago i posted the intercooler screen DIY, and mentioned "(I'd love to get my hands on a spare mesh (plastic) radiator grill...". implying this would make the intercooler screen match. today, if you look closely at the MINI2 pics of the '07s...

If you buy an 07 you won't have to worry about bugs & stuff getting through the scoop. It's a fake, oh my God!!!

That I can't tell you, but I do know it isn't behind or under that fake scoop. That just really bugs the carp out of me. Harrumph!!!

The '07s are turbocharged, hence no need for the intercooler, and hence the fake hood scoop.
