Hey Duck,

If you want to get to get the illuminated turn signals, then by all means go for it, regardless of what other peeps say. Check out ebay, I found these for ya:

Good luck!

EXACTLY! THANK YOU FOR PROVING THE POINT! "looking cool" is a by-product of this safety feature.

planeguy....ANSWER THE QUESTION....is this redundant on ALL cars or just the Mini?

And why am I so stuipid to think that it was simply a reflector? It's made of the same material as a REFLECTOR on my M3. That could have very well been an additional side marker, but no...it's just a reflector.
It is redundant on the MINI and any car with a fuctioning indicator light in the fender, like on most VW's and Audi's this is a very prevalent feature on most european cars.....Its stupid for you to think it a reflector because it is clear! And you are about the only person who has never noticed this functioning on the many other cars that have the feature, as opposed to the number of cars that have clear reflectors on their fender ....none that I know of. But it remains that stupid is what me and most others will think when we see blinking leds in your mirror 18" away from the blinking light the factory provided. So again quit pretending that it is a added safety feature when it is a styling issue!

I'm sorry to see this level of negativity directed at someone who is still looking to purchase his first MINI.

I think it is both a styling and safety feature. From certain angles, mirror lights would be far more visible than the fender lights. You would have to run the turn signal wires into the door. My impression from people describing stereo installations is that is a somewhat involved process to route wires through the existing grommet into the door.

Planeguy Clean Up Your Act

HEY PLANEGUY,
You need to lighten up, and grow up. Either be nice or someone will report you as a bad post.
Forums are for exactly that, research, experience, and investigations of new, different and exciting products. There are no opinions involved when trying to research a new product. God knows if there was, there wouldn't be individuality. I belong to MANY other Forums, it involves, mature responsible adults interacting in a positive fashion towards all other individuals, businesses and vendors. If you can't keep your negativity to yourself, and need to bring down, criticize or bash others, I would encourage you to just keep your keyboard silent. NOBODY likes your attitude, it's abusive. Go abuse somebody else in your life. If you want to converse on this board in a mature, intelligent, and intellectual fashion, then the clean up your act.

Too late. It's already been reported.

Let's try to get this thread back on track without the attitude.

LED IN SIDE MIRRORS - find production company

I will continue to investigate as well as Duck, finding out the LEDS for turn signal mirrors, it already is functioning on many, many different vehicles, so I think it must be a common problem. I know so many of the automakers would not put them on their vehicles for asthetic reasons. I know when I see a vehicle with the LEDS in their mirrors, I really see them! In fact, I have added all LEDS on my motorcyle as well, just for the sole purpose of being seen. When you are a small object, people look right though you. I have an SUV, and a MINI. My line of sight is much better in the SUV. Lets see if we can find manufacturers for this size mirror, can't be that difficult! If we have a sign up list, maybe we can prod them into production!

Though I am not too much into it either, but you have the right to customize your own MINI

Here is what I found on ebay for MINI:

Since the mirror turn signals are completely invisible except when actually signaling a turn, I fail to see the "bad" side to them, other than cost. If they were offered as an OEM option, I probably would have gotten them.

That being said, increased visibility when signaling is the #1 reason why I swapped out my taillights with the OEM version, which actually makes the turn indicators amber as I feel they should be. I also put the amber side signal lamps on (the ones that come with the Cooper), for the same reason... and they pair quite well with the ones in the rear tail lights now, IMO.

I'm putting color into my side signal lamps, but for aesthetic reasons. But as a cyclist as well as a driver of small vehicles in the land of plenty (of SUVs) I would not only have taken a second set of turn indicators (in the mirror or wherever else) as a dealer option, and paid for it. It can't hurt. But anyway, that's half the delight of this board, seeing what customizations people are up to, functional or aesthetic or both.

The eBay ones really aren't that good. They aren't reliable, very cheap looking, and can be seen even when not in use....which kind of defeats the purpose. I know many people who purchased them and said they wouldn't recommend them to anyone.

There is a manufacturer willing to make mirrors with the LEDs built in (and what I currently have installed on my Pontiac)

www.muthco.com

That's the only one I know of. Since they don't make the mirrors for the Mini, they request that people fill out a "Vehicle Request Form" and if there is enough interest, they will see if they can make a kit. When I talked with a guy, he said it depends on demand and how complex the electrical system is...which has me worried based on what some people have said about the system. They have MANY components, and if they are able to put a system together with the components they have that makes the demand much lower.

SO, I may start a new thread seeing if people are interested and if they want to fill out a vehicle request form, that would be awesome. If nothing comes out of it, can't say we tried. Here's the Request Form:

i filled out the request form to MUTH

Hey Duck,
I filled out the form.
I also got a response back from this guy Chris. His letter to me was alot different, but I responded and asked him what kind of financial committment and request numbers they needed to get this project rolling.

see below:

Dear Stacy,

Thank you for your interest in Signal® Mirrors! We currently do not have plans to develop a Signal Mirror® retrofit specific kit for your Mini Cooper. This is due to low customer demand to date. Thank you for your request as it is important and helps us to determine what customer interest exists for specific vehicles. We will contact you if we do offer a kit in the future.

If you have any questions or comments, please contact me directly.
Sincerely,
Chris Wedge

I'll wait awhile and then add myself to the list. Don't want to just have 5 of us do it on one day and then nothing. ;-)

^^^ Nah...I'm good NOW!

But, I'm not too sure how to go about this just because there really doesn't seem to be too much of an interest. I don't know if I can post in multiple forums to get some interest or if I'd get banned doing that. I better read up.

Even if you sign up it doesn't mean you need to purchase! It's just getting enough interest out there for the Muth people to make a kit.

Duck, did you install the one you have on your Pontiac, and what exactly is in the "kit"? It seems to me that the product shouldn't need to be much more than a replacement mirror glass (with embedded LEDs) that has a connector for two wires. You should be able use one for a car that has a larger mirror than MINI by trimming down the glass to fit.

hmmm,
thats what i was thinking too. Not to manufactur a whole entire housing, but just a replacement mirror? How difficult can that be? We need to find someone who understands the entire workings of an LED mirror.
Duck, did you install you SUV leds? or did they come with the vehicle?

I had a friend install the mirrors for me. Remember guys, this "kit" is NOT housing and everything. All it is is the mirror glass with the LEDs embedded in them. But then there is wiring that needs to be routed to meet up with the signal system in your car. It seemed like the installation was relatively easy. The only pain we had to deal with was taking the interior panels off the front doors, taking the mirror housing off, and routing everything through. Not hard, just a little time consuming.

I thought about getting a PT Cruiser setup, but, I don't know about a couple things:

1) I don't kow if these kits are wiring specific to the car. A PT electrical system is different than a Mini electrical system.

2) The glass mounting in the housing may be different. They take into account heated mirrors, power mirrors, etc. etc.

I think the only thing that can be done is for them to actually make the mirrors for the Mini!

They started making them for Harleys a few years back. Before the SUV's caught on. I believe Muth was the manufacturer. As I recall they had a kit but can't remember the specifics.

that is correct, and it is Muth. I looked at Harleys site last night at all the mirrors, as I am looking to put them on my motorcycle.

Door panels and the mirror come off of the MINI very easily, shoudlnt take more than 10 minutes a side.

The wiring for these cant bee to complex. 2 wire hookup, positive and negative. You will have to tie them ino the fender turn signals.

I would think the PT cruiser mounting system is different, as the type of mirror is completely different than the MINI. You will have to use a MINI mirror to make this work.

These would be extremely easy to make yourself, I cant believe someone would pay for these.
