Interior/Exterior Wink Mirrors
Wink Mirrors
Did a search and a few folks talk about it, but I didn't see any precedent.; anybody install one in their new MINI?
If so, do's, don'ts?
They rock BTW in classic Minis...
Thanks

I don't have one in my MINI, but I used to run one in an MGB-GT for awhile.
It was kind of cool at first, but it drove me nuts and I eventually trashed it. In the MG it was impossible to run any sort of sunvisor flaps with it and it actually got in the way more than the added rear vision was worth to me.
As always, YMMV.

had one in my old 78 corolla. I loved it. felt like I could see all around the car. great for heavy traffic. Not sure how much you would see out of the cooper tho. yes I agree about the sun shields being useless after installing one of these. Just try to install it as far forward as you can and it won't smack you in the forehead.

I've been looking for that but didn't know what it was called/couldn't get a search hit for it; all I could remember was Wink Mirror.
You're right - MMB. Do you have one installed?
huh, i didn't know wat a "wink" mirror was... thought something women do
in their car after doing her makeup.
it's like those panoramic-view mirrors. i c...

...is it just me or is the rearview mirror exageratedly huge on the MC. It blocks 1/3 of the front vision. I hate it @ autoX. Longer, thiner like the wink, but OEM looking.
One thing I would change for 2007, are you listening BMW?

Funny thing is that they INCREASED the size of the mirror in '05, apparently in response to customer complaints that it (and not the size of the rear window - WHICH IS THE WHOLE BACK END) was too small. :impatient
I agree that the new one is relatively massive. I look forward far more often than behind.

Well I took another method to the wink mirror cause I can't remove the OEM mirror b/c of the key fob eletronics. I have a blind spot mirror on ethier side ($2 instead of $40 for the OEM equivalent and one baby mirror looking out both passenger windows, so I have 6 mirrors and see everyting at least twice. Very hard to miss anything and my insturtors on the track seemed happy not to ask me to adjust anything as they had an almost equal 180 degree view of the rear.
I recently installed a pair of Multivex mirrors on my MINI: http://www.multivexmirror.com/ They are fantastic for eliminating blind spots due to the aspheric contour of the glass.
For a discussion of the Multivex mirrors on the Elise forum, go here:

I have installed the mirrors on several cars and have been very pleased by the results. A couple of disclaimers:
1. The edges of the mirror are unfinished so I sanded them smooth with 180 grit sandpaper before installing. This would be a process reserved only for the **** retentive among us.
2. Don't try to buff out any scratches on the mirror surface. The mirror coating is on the surface, and while it's very durable, it won't tolerate serious buffing. The last set of mirror I ordered came with some surface scratching from shipping and when I tried to buff it out I ruined the mirror. However, Multivex sent me a replacement free of charge which was a nice surprise especially when I admited to buffing the coating off.

The Multivex mirror looks pretty thick, does it impact the function of heated mirrors?
For the "wink" mirror, how does it work at night? I'm worried about being blinded by being able to see too much light, does it dim?

For anyone looking at a wink mirror...
I know they aren't real popular, but I do love mine. I've seen them done on minis maintaining the sun visors, but if you are willing to part with them, I came up with a pretty fool proof installation method. I had some spare pieces about from a set of splitter turnbuckles. I removed the visors from their mounts and put an eyelet through that hole, capped with a washer and locking nut. Because the eyelets move I did have to use a bit of extra pieces to hold them tight, but it maintains a pretty OE look, and it mounted in front of the OEM mirror, so worst case you could snap it pack on for inspections. I, however, in a fit of 3:00am creativity, turned mine into a camera mount...
