Avoid BFP

I'm pretty pissed at BFP because:

-though I've emailed quite a few times (4 or 5 times, a few times on here, and a few to his/their website email link), I have yet to get one responce, other than my receipt the day I ordered the scoops

-the scoops don't fit right away. They take tweaking, and even then, it's questionable

-the "y-pipe" presses up against your Alta intake. I hacked about 2-3" off it with a dremel tool so I could have slight peace of mind against getting water into the intake

The story: I've wanted the scoops for a while, and I spent quite some time searching and posting, asking if they can draw water into the intake. Of course, I got no response from BFP, in spite of the emails, but I did get several posts from others that have had it and everyone claims that it's fine, no water, etc. Just to be on the safe side, I cut down the "y-pipe" before putting the scoops on, thinking it would take care of my water worries. Yeah, right.

I washed the car a few days ago at one of those DIY places, and the sprayer went over the intake quickly once, maybe twice. I opened the hood and felt the filter, and felt a little dampness, but no major worries.

Flash to today. Today I drove home early from work, and it started raining. Part of the drive brought me through some serious rain, as in "I can't see the damn road it's raining so hard" kind of rain. As usual, the tips got wet, and the Mini sounded really good However, when I got home, the rain had stopped, so I popped the hood again to see how it handled. The filter was soaked right below the "y-pipe" area. I'm more than a little pissed... I really doubt BFP would back up an engine replacement caused by their product.

I'm about to take the dremel to it again, this time angling back the cuts on the "y-pipe" so as to have the air heading down and away from the filter, rather than directly onto it. This defeats the entire purpose of the pipe, and I'm feeling pretty gyped on the whole thing, for three reasons:

1) I payed 50 bucks for something I'm pretty much cutting all the way off the scoops.

2) I payed 150 bucks for intakes that don't fit in correctly even when put in the right way, and they are a living hell installing. No directions, of course.

3) Rather than having plastic clips like the original, they have screws to use as clips, and I sh*t you not, the metal edge is being held by the flat-head slot in the screws. You hear it "click" as you fit them in.

Worst of all, they aren't even safe! At least they can make a cover/lid/plug for rain, or advise to be used on dry roads/tracks only, or something. I'm half tempted to put the stock vents back on, if the scoops didn't look better than stock.

Here's the stock picture:

And here's the scoop after I attacked it the first time:

I'm about to cut it a second time and will post pictures and results. My guess is that I am going to have to cut it completely to remove the chances of getting the intake wet.

Update: Here's what it looks like now I cut it. It's back on the mini, now I just have to drive in a snow/rainstorm and see if it works. Otherwise, I'm going to have to cut the whole damn thing off and pretty much be out 50 bucks.

You know you could have gotten the cowl vent scoops from www.mossmini.com for about $120 I think. I got a set used on eBay for $90 shipped and painted them black/clear coat.

I drilled one wide hole behind my air filter, perpendicular to the floor and a few small holes, parallel to the floor, and if I wash my car and spray water near the vents I can see the area behind the intake does indeed get nice and wet.

All the y-pipe does is facilitate the travel of water into your intake.

Perhaps you can make use of the y-pipe on the passenger side to funnel some cool air back over to the driver side with some kind of flexible tubing....
