Interior/Exterior Trailer Hitch
Trailer Hitch
Sunday, I spotted a yellow cooper S towing a small trailer in Menard's parking lot in Peoria, Illinois. I drove back around and asked the couple where they got it. The man said he called about to hitch manufacturers and none made them. A couple of companies said they would give him one for free if he was willing to drop the car off and let them have it for a week. Instead, he signed, had built and installed his own. It came out that little faux mesh oval filler panel just above the exhaust pipes, on a cooper S. He told me he did have to drop the exhaust and remove the heat shields to make it fit.
As luck would have it, I forgot to get their names. But I do know they live ~ 26 miles north of Peoria in a town of ~ 2000 people. How hard is it going to be to find the owners of a yellow cooper S?

Interesting. I've been looking for a good solution to tow my race tires for some time. And you say there's a Cooper S with a custom Hitch in the Peoria area????? I'm going to be keeping my eyes peeeled for that car!
There's one in SC, too....strangely enough also yellow. This guy had the receiver coming out the reverse lamp hole. When he wasn't using it he had a cover in place so you couldn't even tell there was a hitch on the car. It, too, was custom made.
you mean...

Trailer hitch
Hey, thats my car!
In the case of my hitch, I lowered but did not have to remove the exhaust.
I spent about 6 months mentally designing a hitch, and 5 of those ducking my wife who thought I would make the care UGLY. When I finally went to build it, my first attempt was weak and bent, but this one does fine. My co driver does not complain, and uses the trailer occasionally.
I have a web page that shows what was done, and shows an alternative that is commercially available.

One of the guys in our MINI club, uses his 2003 MCS to tow his Mini Moke to club meetings using the commercial hitch. The Hoop over the pipes was designed by an Autocrosser in New York to pull his tire trailer.
I live in a Chicago Suburb. I don't make and Sell hitches as I can just imagine the Liability, but I occasionally help friends with welding projects.
Using my photos, you local welding shop could make the parts for you.
